Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Son.
Stephanie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Like most artists, I’ve been drawing since I was a child. During my time in elementary school, I even sold Pokemon fan art to my classmates for pocket change! Then when I got home from school, I would watch hours and hours of cartoons and animated shows. My favorites being King of the Hill and The Simpsons.
Eventually, I found out that animated works took lots and lots of people to create. This totally blew my mind back then (makes total sense though). I wanted to study animation and possibly work in a tv studio someday. So after graduating high school, I went to study at an out of state art college and received a BFA in Animation. I studied under some amazing professors and made some life long friends that loved doing the same stuff that I did!
Now I’m back in Texas and working as a freelance animator and illustrator while selling my work at local art shows and conventions.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I enjoy creating works that are full of bright, colorful, cute characters while also creating contrasting black and white illustrations that might include a pin-up or two. None of my work has super deep meanings; sometimes I just like to make stuff that looks cool or beautiful! I love when people come up to me at shows, their eyes light up, and they see something within my pieces that are unique to them.
I turn my illustrations into stickers, prints, buttons, zines, lanyards, etc. And I recently have been dabbling into designing enamel pins! I really love that people can wear my art and pair them with their choice in fashion.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I think now that social media is now bigger than ever, it’s been easier to put yourself out there and be found in the industry. But also on the downside, there also SO much out there that we are constantly being bombarded with information.
I think that our community can help artists by vouching for each other, put on more fun art shows, and promote smaller artists!
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I try and find local art events and conventions near me that I can promote myself at. My next show the Oddities and Curiosities Expo in Dallas on March 30th! I always post about event updates and details on my social media.
