Conversations with the Inspiring Linda Mak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Mak.

Linda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always got into my mom’s makeup products; playing with eyeshadows, different lipstick shades, blushes, etc. I grew to love it. Makeup became a hobby and something that I could turn to as a stress-reliever. I practiced on friends and family to better myself and my craft. I recently decided to turn my hobby into a professional career because I want to share what I know/learned throughout the years with everyone and make them feel good about themselves.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would be lying if I said it was easy because it’s not. No matter your career, there will always be roadblocks. I work a full-time job and also provide my makeup services on the weekends/when I can so it has definitely been a struggle juggling both. My advice is to continue to push yourself. Keep doing what you love and success will come later.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a certified makeup artist. As I’ve said previously, I’ve always loved makeup growing up and would watch YouTube videos to learn about different products, techniques, etc. So, I guess you could say I was self-taught. I decided to become certified to further my knowledge and to also learn different techniques, makeup styles from someone who has been in the industry for quite some time. I’m all about enhancing features but also help you to look your best. Whether you want a soft, natural look or a glam look, I can help you achieve it.

I think what sets me apart is the fact that I take pride in what I do. I want you to leave feeling like a million bucks (lol). Also, I’m all about skin care as well. Although, I’m not an esthetician, for me personally, I invest a lot into skincare products. Skincare is so important to make your makeup application flawless.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
One of the biggest barriers I think is confidence. With so many amazing makeup artists out there, it’s hard not to compare yourself to others. I’ll admit, sometimes I think “am I good enough?” “Will people value my work?” “Will I get clients?” But if you’re clear on your purpose and know what you’re trying to achieve, then you will be successful in getting what you want!
