Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Jones.
Kat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I come from a family of hairstylists. My great-grandmother was a hairstylist and ran her own salon behind her house in Denton. My mother was a hairstylist as well as providing the hottest styles from as far as I can remember. I learned so much early in age from watching her. I attended cosmetology school in high school so I’ve been in the beauty world for 18 years.
My husband and I decided back in 2011 to start our own salon. We had so many different ideas. Our vision wanting something on a smaller scale started off as working under a big name suite salon but we searched around Denton County and found a hidden gem that became Hair Studio 18.
When we first began, our focus was to provide haircare to college students since the universities are only two miles away. Little did we know, those students would recommend their families to receive services and friends of those! Needless to say, we’re blessed!
Now, over eight years later, we are still continuing to educate our clients in healthy hair care. Also, we’ve recently been nominated Top 3 Best of Denton County 2018 and nominated in the running Best of Denton 2019. We are elated at the amount of support the community and surrounding cities have given us.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I stopped working for a corporate, I ran a salon and opened Hair Studio 18, I had absolutely no clientele! I only worked on Fridays and Saturdays to be exact and it definitely wasn’t easy not knowing if someone would walk through the door. Back then, I wasn’t big on social media so marketing was passing out flyers and that was it. I finally figured out years later through many struggles and my husband’s encouragement on how to build a stable clientele and keep them coming. Talk about a tough start!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hair Studio 18 story. Tell us more about the business.
At Hair Studio 18, myself and Master Stylist Elenor Gilbert of 19 years serve a diverse clientele. She’s been working with me since the beginning of Hair Studio 18 and is skilled in all areas of hairstyling. She’s an amazing addition to the Hair Studio 18 team! We are Textured Hair and Color Specialist. There is a great demand for our type of services in the area. We go above and beyond for our clients and make sure they’re happy with their results before they leave the salon. What I’m most proud of with my business is the recognition in the area even if a potential client hasn’t been to our salon they know about Elenor and I and that alone is special to me.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My industry evolves on a daily. The thing about that, trends and styles that were popular 15-20 years ago come and go. There are always new techniques and I’m eager to stay on top of the game.
