Meet Corey Cannon of Cannon Home Builders in West Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Cannon.

Corey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
How it started for my business:
I was always interested in owning my own business since I was young. I did various different avenues of businesses such as personal training and helping people reach their fitness goals, buying vehicles and selling them for profit, to playing in the stock market and finding other ways of investing money. I was always looking to make a profit with everything I did and I didn’t want to spend money unless I could make more with it. I went to the University of North Texas to get an environmental science degree because I found the topic interesting. I worked a full-time job 10 hours a day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday while also being a full-time student on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I graduated in 2013 and got a job at Devon Energy while continuing to save my money I thought it was time to make a big move and start a business in 2015. I bought an acre lot, built a house on it and sold it. I made a pretty good profit and then looked for more lots. This time I bought two lots side by side and built houses on both. I continued to buy lots and built on them. In the first quarter of 2018, I started another company Triad Land and Development with two partners to start creating subdivisions and developing land. Throughout this process of building houses and developing land, I found tiny houses to be interesting and decided to build one in 2016, so I could sell it. My first one was a success and I gained a lot of recognition from it in the tiny house community so I decided to build more. I have been contacted by HGTV as well as numerous other tiny house outlets about my houses. I really enjoy building the tiny houses because they have a small footprint, they’re economical and efficient.

How I started my acting career:
I was always interested in film and making movies since I was young. I would go out and make movies with my friends with the old school VHS recorder. When I graduated high school, I took a stunt class “United Stunt Academy” and from there, I met an acting coach and talent manager Twila Barnett. I started taking acting classes and working on small projects. I took a break from acting while I was going to college but started back up after I graduated and I wanted to pursue it fervently. It has always been a passion of mine so I decided to go full force into the my acting career. I got signed with the Linda McCalister Talent agency and also partnered with some really great people to form a team and start making our own movies, shorts, and TV shows. We currently have two projects that are completed and in post-production. We are also in development of two other projects, one of which I am writing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Business-wise:
No, it has most definitely not been a smooth road. I have lost money on deals and have dealt with so much stress and burdens on my shoulders. I’ve invested a lot of money in houses and land and brought my bank account down to almost $0 in the process waiting for a house to sell. When owning a business the ultimate responsibility for it to be a success is up to the owner, all the weight is on you. With all the struggles and stress, in the end, it is all worth it.

Acting career-wise:
It has been a struggle, mainly an internal battle of having the self-confidence to be able to perform a role in front of people. You have to be confident in your self to be in this industry because if you don’t believe you can play a certain character then nobody else will either. We only have one life to live and I want to live my life to the fullest and pursue my passions no matter how much the struggle is.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always adventurous and loved taking risks. I was also interested in business and always knew I would work for myself one day, I just had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was young. I never wanted to be average and work a 9 to 5 job like mainstream society, I always wanted to think outside the box with creative ways of making money.

I grew up with an amazing family that always supported every decision I made and pushed me to be all I can be. I also grew up in church and that is a big part of my life along with helping people out as much as I can and I put God first in everything I do.

Some of my hobbies are: working out, traveling, trying new things, adventure and making movies.

Always go after your dreams and never stop believing in yourself. If you want to do something then go out and do it. Ive always wanted to fly a plane, so one day I decided to start pilot training and get my license. Now I can fly whenever I want. It’s really that simple all you have to do is have a dream, put in some effort and go for it.
