Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Roesler.
Becky, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always loved anything and everything about visual arts, and am a life-long maker and art student. I’ve been painting full-time now for about 16 years, and I’m still thrilled every single day when I walk into my studio and get to do exactly what I love to do the most. I’m usually in the studio seven days a week and spend about half my time painting and half doing the business end. After a long career in the corporate world, this hardly feels like work at all!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Making art makes me so happy! I love making both abstract and floral paintings full of joyful energy, vibrant color, and whimsical charm. I’m a Colorist at heart, so whatever style of art I choose to paint, color is always my main subject.
I painted realistic artwork for years and never had any interest in abstraction. In fact, I did not like abstracts at all, and I had never painted one. Then on my 60th birthday, I was feeling stuck, bored, and frustrated with my artwork. I needed a new artistic direction, so I decided to play with color only, no recognizable shapes allowed. I put on my favorite music, grabbed whatever color making tool was available, and went to town. For the first time, I painted for myself and no one else without any expectations. I simply explored what happens when one color is placed next to another. Wow! I finally got it. By the end of the day, I was in love with the freedom, play, and exploration that is my kind of abstraction.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
My definition of artistic success is loving what I do and getting to do it every day. Sharing my artwork with others who feel a real connection to it is a beautiful bonus, and it’s even better if they want to live with it in their own homes or offices. Success to me is simply having the funds and the space in my studio to keep making more art. I am so grateful to all the collectors who have taken my art into their hearts and homes so I can keep doing what I love to do.
I believe a successful artist is one who never stops learning. It’s important to take the time to study art and experiment. Have fun, and learn as much as you can about all the different facets of art while you’re at it. Daily painting or sketching trains your hands and eyes to work together as one. And those times that you get into your head’s art zone and create something wonderful without even knowing how you did it will surprise and delight you!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
