Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Rizo.
Maria, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I’ve always loved makeup and would regularly get complimented on it. People would often ask if I could do theirs for a special event. At first I was very hesitant considering the fact that doing makeup on someone other than yourself is totally different. But I slept on the propositions, practiced a lot on family and friends, got the courage to say yes, and long story short, here I am today doing what I love on others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Self-doubt has always been my biggest setback. I entered a makeup competition of over 300 contestants about a year ago and ended up winning 1st place. That gave me so much confidence and pushed me to follow my dreams. The best advice I can give is to practice, take opportunities, and believe in your art!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a certificated freelance makeup artist. To me, makeup is a form of expression and I love it all. Anything from a soft, natural glam, to a more colorful, artsy look, whatever vision my client or I have in mind I love to bring it to life.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
We live in the age of social media, so definitely using that to your advantage is important. Knowing how to expose your work will lead to a great audience. From connecting with peers who share similar interests as you to growing your clientele, if you use your social media to your advantage you will definitely see growth and positive feedback.
