Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Kalish.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
There is something really comforting about being an ‘artist,’ but I tend to think of myself as more of a scientist. My fascination with art and the human body reaches back to when I was small. Habitually, I would stay awake and draw instead of sleeping through nap time. It wasn’t until after I had graduated grade school that I took an academic art class and that is when I found figure drawing. Up until that point, I had spent my time studying anatomy and its physiology, microbiology, pathology and had soaked up enough knowledge about cardiology to become a Certified EKG Technician before secondary schooling. My life came to a halt when I took that first art class. Suddenly, it felt like I had tripped and fallen off a well-worn path, and quickly wondered, “in which direction could I find ‘artist’?”
Please tell us about your art.
I’m mainly a figurative artist working in graphite and recently in oil. I enjoy full-figure studies because they are challenging and require a lot of attention. It is my intent to find a way to ‘bring the figures to life.’ We spend all of our lives looking at people, and it’s easy for art to find itself in the uncanny valley. I would like for the figure to feel familiar and share a dialogue with its viewer.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success is a good night’s sleep and excitement for the next day. I take all of my victories, no matter how small.
