Today we’d like to introduce you to Dora Vera.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dora. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My story in the makeup world started because I was on the pursuit of happiness. At the time I was completing my basics at a community college, and I honestly was not feeling it. I had the mentality that if I was going to work for the rest of my life, I wanted to do something that made me happy, not money. I have always LOVED playing with makeup. For me, it was truly an art form and a way for me to express myself creatively.
At the time my roommate was super into makeup, and she inspired me to go back to my roots of makeup that were planted at the age of 11. From there I dropped out of college to begin, what I had no idea could be, a career in the makeup artistry world. I begin to like a deer in headlights looking for ways and avenues into this world. I gave myself some goals, and with lots of hard work, I began my business at the age of 23.
I became my own boss and never looked back. I continue to educate myself not only in business but also in the artistry side to perfect my craft as a makeup artist. I have now moved into a space where I want to share this tool with women who are on the struggle bus to learn techniques that work for them. So it is my honor to now share my love of makeup and show other women how they can be creative as well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a complete roller coaster ride! Even six years in. Recently I felt like “Oh no, this is the end of my career” but it wasn’t. It was just one of those bumps in the road to your dreams. My early struggles were comparing myself to other people because my work was a little different from what everyone was doing and I thought that was wrong. Now my struggles are getting over myself and any fears that I have around wanting to explore new things around makeup. This year I have told myself that I will not have any more fear and I will just jump! Practice before perfection!
Please tell us about The Look | Makeup & Hair Studio.
I specialize in beauty makeup. I am known for creating looks for everyday women that embrace THEM. I am not the artist that you go to to look like someone else. I genuinely believe everyone has beauty within them and so it is my job to highlight that beauty with as little makeup as possible and show you that it doesn’t take a full face to create a beautiful makeup look. In the era of social media, I feel like everything out there is about heavy foundation, boldly carved out brows, and fake lashes.
All of that is pretty and fun to create but realistically many every day people do not have time for that. I help empower you to have the confidence and knowledge that makeup is whatever you want it to be. Depending on how much time you have to do your makeup, your budget, and the occasion, I will assist you in creating looks that you can create at home and feel good about!
I am so proud to have opened my eyes to the tool of makeup and how it can really transform lives in moments where one may be struggling to get out of bed and into the world. I believe that sets me apart from others. I want to be able to mentality help those who need a little boost to keep moving forward in life because life can be so good!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories are going to Mexico for the weekend and holidays and also spending time with my friends. I still do this day know and talk to my very first friend ever. Most of my relationships are from my childhood, and I feel blessed to still have these women and men in my life after 20+ years.
