Meet Tamara Smith of Tamara Michelle Hair in Mesquite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Smith.

Tamara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
You know that one thing that just makes you so happy?! For me, that’s hair. I’ve always loved hair. I can remember vividly being a kid watching my grandmother sit at the stove and hot comb and style her hair. One year I asked for a mannequin head for Christmas and that did it for me, I was hooked. I always dipped and dabbed with hair here and there but I didn’t get serious until June of 2015. I remember something just hitting me and saying, “it’s time”!

So I called Ogle School of Hair, Skin & Nails and talked to one of the recruiters. Set my interview up for that following Monday, did my admission paperwork, etc. That following Monday I started. I can say that was by far one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I knew it was going to be a well worth it sacrifice. I was still working full time and a full-time parent but I made those 19 hour days and every other Saturday work. All with the help of my support system, MY FAMILY! With their help, I graduated three months early in December 2016 and by February 2017 I was licensed per the state of Tx!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, it’s not easy by a long shot. You have to be dedicated, focused and you have to give your all. I remember plenty of days of wanting to give up and just quit altogether but I’m glad I didn’t. The hair industry is so cutthroat and you have to have thick skin to make it. I remember always being discouraged, I wanted to jump right in and be successful but no! It doesn’t work like that. You have to get out here and make a name for yourself. I was so caught up in the success of others and wondering what I was doing wrong that I couldn’t focus on my own success.

Tamara Michelle Hair – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am Tamara Michelle Hair. I specialize in Natural hair, Custom Units & Extensions. I’m most proud of where I am today. I started at home and I’m not ashamed to say, because we all have to start somewhere, But now I am in my own suite and doing well for myself. I take pride in my business, my customer service skills, the atmosphere I provide and the experience I give. Hair is my passion, I don’t just do it because its a lucrative business. I live and breathe hair. I’m always on the hunt to find ways to better my brand. I go to hair shows every year to expand my knowledge, I have hair sisters that help me along the way & most importantly, a mentor.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
This moment right now is the proudest. Me being featured in this magazine was on my list of goals for 2019 & look, here we are just in March and I can check this off of my list. My close, close friends and family know how much this means to me, I’m so elated.
