Today we’d like to introduce you to Davier Godsey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hair has always been a part of my life and is a skill that came naturally. Most refer to it as being self-taught. I’ve always had a love for hair, and the passion increased as I entered into my adult years. It became second nature to me when friends and family would ask me to do their hair. I never dreamed that my talent would blossom into a career. Hair is a way for most to express themselves and I’m so happy that I am able to do that through Stylesbydavi.
I started Stylesbydavi after taking a leap of faith with my career back in 2017. At the time, I’d just completed a job assignment with American Airlines Corporate and found myself in a place where I felt change was needed. I remember going on job interviews and having no luck with employment, nor any fulfillment on the inquired positions. Eventually, I decided to be a substitute teacher for both Arlington and Desoto ISD, just to ensure I had a full week of work, along with doing hair on the weekends. It actually got to the point where I would be on a substitute teaching assignment and my phone would ring literally throughout the day from people trying to book hair appointments with me. I decided to put my talent to the test and become my own BOSS. I have not turned back and absolutely love what I do.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I originally decided to do hair full-time, I put everything on paper and came up with a business plan. I put that plan in motion and it has been a smooth transition for me because of it. I’ve dealt with trial and error and challenges just like any entrepreneur on their journey. I learn from the mistakes and errors and ask for feedback from my clients so that I can make wiser business choices for future clients.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Styles by Davi story. Tell us more about the business.
Stylesbydavi is a name I created, based off my nickname. Most refer to me as “Davi”, which is short for Davier. I specialize in Goddess Locs, which is what I am known for in the community. I do everything myself. I work extremely hard to show up for my clients and my work speaks for itself. I love the creativity my clients allow and entrust me to have when it comes to color choosing and hair accessories…and it generates a ton of repeat and referral business. I say all this humbly, but with confidence and gratitude.
I am most proud of my consistency and improvement over the last two years when it comes to time management. In 2017, it would take me 7-8 hours to finish a complete install of Locs. Today, it takes me 2-3 hours MAX to finish.
What sets me apart from other stylists in the DFW area is that I “specialize” in Goddess Locs, provide a quality service at competitive rates and minimal time…when most have it as just a service they offer.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I plan to expand Stylesbydavi to nearby cities; Austin, Houston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
