Today we’d like to introduce you to Bessy Martinez.
Bessy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
As a child, my mother, father and I traveled a lot. We were refugees seeking asylum from our country in Central America. My parents gave speeches about our journey in colleges, Congress, and so many other places across the nation. Many of those memories were captured through photographs from the newspapers that covered my family’s story. When my parents passed them down to me, I remember seeing them and feeling our journey all over again through each image. It wasn’t until I was in my adult life, that I would cross paths with photography. I was just a mom in the digital era, wanting to capture her eldest son’s baseball games. My husband was the one that would share them on Facebook, and the reaction we got was pretty neat. I loved capturing those moments and others I did. That is when I fell in love with telling a story through imagery. I’m self-taught, and it’s both rewarding but challenging at times. My family and friends believe in what I do, and it just motivates me to keep learning and sharing with whoever will let me.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I currently photograph families, weddings, and portraits both here in the DFW area as well as throughout Texas and anywhere it takes me. I hope to continue to grow my portfolio in each part as well as empower other business owners through branding. My kids are a huge part of my drive to building my business. I want to show them that dreams come true but hard work makes them everlasting. I’m always wanting to help others, and my form of paying it forward is creating images that tell their stories. I want to empower and lead a movement for future generations that no matter age, ethnicity, race, or background WE all have the right to shine. Embrace your gift and just work hard for it. When you love what you do you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
As in any field, not just photography, competition can be intimidating. It can create self-doubt and hesitation to go for what they want to do. I’m a huge advocate for #communityovercompetion. Let’s share knowledge to those who seek it, and our community can only become stronger because of it.
