Meet Sissy Pop of Drag On Tap in Oaklawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sissy Pop.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I actually had no desire to make Drag a career. I got started three years ago. And ex-roommate needed a drag performer to fill in a spot at her show. I’m a makeup artist by trade. So I agreed to put myself in drag and Perform. I got bookings to a monthly show after that first show over three years ago. After a year of doing the drag, I was taught. I became bored and didn’t feel like I was reaching my true drag potential. I took a month off drag to reinvent myself.

That month off lead me to become Sissy2.0. An alternative bearded spook queen. I meet a group of amazing alternative queens. That showed me the beauty in the weird. That being a freak isn’t a bad thing. I gained so much confidence in myself and wanted to instill that feeling in others. I became the host of Drag on Tap at Cedar Springs Taphouse. And with the help of my sisters of D.O.T. With created a safe place for performers like us. Performers who express their creativity through their inner freak. Drag on Tap has recently hit one year anniversary

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a struggle finding my voice. My boyself hasn’t never been a huge talker. I didn’t find my voice until I created Sissy. Sissy is loud outspoken yet kind and giving. Sissy is a giant personality. And the bigger Sissy gets, the smaller My boyself gets. It’s hard to find that balance and something I’m still working on.

Drag On Tap – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Drag on Tap is my weekly drag show at Cedar Springs Taphouse. I host the show every Monday 930pm. I Summon three performers a week to come compete for a cash payout. But we don’t select a winner by audience participation. No, we believe in equal praise for equal work. So we leave it up to chance. No favoritism. I am very proud of my the type of show I bring to the area.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me. Success is defined not by money or how many followers you have. But by the positive effects/outcome you proved for those around you. If you stick to that mentality. I believe my success will lead to financial one.
