Art & Life with Angela Clemente Davidson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Clemente Davidson.

Angela, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Ever since I was a kid, I have always loved two things – art and animals. If I wasn’t outside with my dogs, you could find me in my room creating something. This led into high school where my favorite courses were without a doubt my art classes. It was the one place I felt as though I had something to offer and really feel like I began to grow as an artist. However, when it was time to go to college, my love for animals took precedent, and I decided to begin my journey to becoming a veterinarian.

Oh, man was that journey a rough one! One late night when I was in the library and struggling to keep my mind on the functions of the cell, I saw a picture of an owl on the computer and just started to sketch. It felt so great to dive into my own little world and spend an hour creating something for the sake of creating. That’s when it all changed for me and art began to slowly find its way back into my life. I decided at that moment that I was going to turn away from biology and instead pursue a degree in graphic design.

The summer before I began the art program, I married my favorite guy and his gift to me on our wedding day was an online calligraphy course by Melissa Esplin. And so my adventure with Angela Davidson Design began! To this day he still tries to take credit for my “success.” I guess you could say he played a small part.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I always have such a hard time categorizing myself as an artist. I am a graphic designer, calligrapher, watercolor artist, and illustrator – basically, I just love to create!

I create not only because it brings me to my happy place and keeps my anxious mind at bay, but because I hope to lift someone up and bring some joy to their life. Whether it is a house portrait I painted of someone’s childhood home, lettered vows for an anniversary, or an invitation suite designed for a couple to commemorate the start of their lives together – each piece holds such value. I know what it’s like to have something in your life that reminds you of the best day. And if something I create can bring someone back to their best day? Then I’m happy.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I think that artists create because they want to not only be seen but heard. We all have things we are struggling with, things we resonate with, things we love, and things we hate. I think when something exciting or shocking happens in our world, artists react the only way we know how – we create. And we hope that when we create, it sticks.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I love connecting with others and am thankful that in today’s world of social media we are able to meet people we otherwise couldn’t! I am so grateful for the community that wants to have a conversation with me about their day and also wants get to know more about me as a person and artist (Instagram (@angeladavidsondesign). I wouldn’t be where I am now in my path if it wasn’t for the incredible people I met on the internet. Not all strangers on the internet should be avoided! 😉
