Today we’d like to introduce you to Virginia Montgomery.
Virginia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the Black Women Hatter. Tiger House Hat Shop was established in 2014 in Duncanville. I started with just Snapback Hats, T-shirts and sports accessories next to my husband barbershop. The owner lost the building and my husband moved back into the Mall and I continued to work full time and did vendor events whenever I had the time. In 2018, I stepped out on faith and left corporate America and decided to sell all types of hats for men and women and brought on-board the Bruno Capelo, Dobbs, Stetson Stacy Adams, Scala, Bailey’s and Kangol brands, accessories and more to come. I currently design some of my own women hats, but my dream is to have my own hat line for men and women.
Tiger House hat shop is now located in Desoto, Texas inside the Grow Desoto Market. The name Tiger House came from my husband. He called me Tiger after I pulled myself back up from a domestic violence relationship I was previously in nine years ago. I moved to Dallas with the help of a family member and never looked back. I am a survivor and an overcomer with the help of God and my husband of three years. A Hat is a crown that we as a society lost, but history repeats itself. It is time to put the Crown back on and my desire is to help you do so with Class, Style, and Love. Tiger House Hat Shop is not just a hat shop, it is an experience.
June 15, 2019, at the Grow Desoto Market, Tiger House Hat Shop will present a Father’s Day Extravaganza Hat Swag Show & Style Competition for Men (on Eventbrite), as well as honor one of our Young Fathers for taking care of home working in the community. This will be the first of many Hat Show to honor the Men.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is a 24 hour a day job. You are always working on your business, rather at the shop, at events, passing out cards and flyers, social media, working in the store, uploading your website. The challenges are funding. It is hard to get funding for Black Women Entrepreneurs, like myself. I use my own monies and work harder than I have ever worked to succeed. I don’t spend money on myself, I put it all back into the Business. I am determined and willing to make the sacrifice because it is worth it.
Tiger House Hat Shop & Accessories – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My Business is Hats, my desire is to make you feel good and look good. They call me either Tiger or the Hat Lady. I like different and I love hats. I like to match a hat with your outfit. What set me apart is my customer service. I give each and every person my undivided attention when they walk thru my doors, even if they just want to talk When they hear the Jazz playing in the background most would say “good selection” and I would smile because I know what good music and good conversation do to the soul.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Stepping out on faith. I feel like I am living my best life.
