Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Spencer.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up my mom’s makeup was my playground. I remember I’d sneak into her makeup drawer and try on every shade of lipstick she owned (sorry, mom!). My love for makeup and all things beauty grew even more from watching makeup tutorials on YouTube. Colors always fascinated me so when I was in school, I’d make sure to accessorize my uniform with color.
As a college student, it became difficult to balance school, studying, working and teaching myself new makeup tricks. When I wasn’t studying, I was watching makeup tutorials, researching the latest trends, perfecting my techniques, shopping for products or practicing on my sister (thanks, sis!). It took months of practice, but my love for makeup kept me going and wanting more. Before I knew it, I was working as a freelance makeup artist at MAC and Sephora.
Dallas opened a lot of doors for me. I’ll be graduating in May with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising and a minor in Business Administration from UTA (go Mavs!). I’m also a makeup freelancer and travel often to service my clients. Social media has helped me grow and showcase my work tremendously. It connected me with big beauty brands such as Sigma Beauty and Gerard Cosmetics.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’d love to say that it’s been a smooth road and that everything just magically fell into place, but that’s far from the truth. It’s taken years of hard work and late nights to get to where I am now. Some people even doubted me because I couldn’t master a perfect cut crease, or a colorful eye look at the beginning. My consistency and most importantly practice led me to where I am now.
It’s so important to keep working hard towards your goal. As cliché as it may sound, consistency really is key. Don’t let anyone doubt your potential or define you. It’s okay if not everyone understands your vision or journey. Always believe in yourself and learn from your mistakes. This industry is very competitive where everyone is trying to be like everyone else, so it’s most important to stay true to yourself and learn to differentiate from the rest.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I began freelancing almost two years ago and now I’ve managed to build my own client roster. I provide makeup consultations for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, graduations and quinceñeras. If I’m not booked, I’m updating my social media accounts with new makeup looks and staying on top of the latest trends. Most of my clients request makeup looks that I post on Instagram, so I do my best to share the latest trends with my followers. One of my recent makeup tutorials was recognized Cardi B’s makeup artist @erika_lapearl_mua. I’ve also been recognized by well-known beauty brands like Elf Cosmetics and Morphe Brushes.
I love when my clients leave with a smile on their face, feeling confident and taken care of. I’m so proud of the brand I’m building for myself and grateful for the connections it has introduced me to. I love being connected with people from around the world on social media. It’s always nice to meet people in the same niche as you who want to empower and uplift one another, and not tear each other down. I love to support women and empower them to be the best version of themselves.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Network, network, network! I can’t express enough how important it is to step out of your comfort zone and begin introducing yourself. It can be intimidating, but this is something your future self will thank you for. I’ve met so many people from networking that helped me get to where I am today. I think finding the right mentor is so important too. I’d suggest finding someone who inspires you and challenges you to be a better version of yourself. One of my favorite quotes is “life begins at the end of your comfort zone” by Neale Donald Walsch.
