Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Walker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jordan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything other than personal training at this point. I’ve been training for a little over four years now. I’ve been into Fitness/physical activity for as long as I can remember due to a passion for basketball. I started playing basketball at the age of seven which requires a lot of physical activity.
It wasn’t until I hit my teen years, probably 13 or 14, that I started really getting into weights because I realized it would make me a better basketball player. I played High school basketball at Martin High school where I earned first team all district and defensive player of the year my senior year (2011). I then went on to play my freshman year at SMU in Dallas and then transferred to play my remaining three years at DBU (Dallas Baptist University). The funny thing is I actually thought I was going to follow in my mother’s footsteps and become an attorney but my junior year I got an internship at the DAs office and decided a desk and suit and tie every day wasn’t for me. I then decided I would go ahead and add a second major (Kinesiology). Since I had been taking those classes anyway, i would still be able to graduate on time without picking up too many extra classes.
After I graduated I got my NASM certification and got a personal training job at 24 hour fitness for about a year. It was a great experience but I knew I wanted more. I couldn’t build the Jwalk Fitness brand I had envisioned at a corporate gym like that. Then, one of my good friends from high school opened up a private gym named Momentum Fitness and told me they were looking for trainers. I felt like this was a sign from God and jumped immediately at the opportunity. I had developed a pretty good relationship with most of my clients so they had no problems going with me to another gym. The rest is history. I have been at Momentum for a little over three years and have grown every year! This gym has allowed me to really grow and continue to grow the Jwalk Fitness Brand and I am extremely blessed to be in the position I’m in!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. I actually had plans of maybe trying to play pro ball overseas, but, I tore my ACL and meniscus my junior year in college and that sort of put a damper on things. I had my best college season my senior year after my recovery but my knee didn’t feel the same and ached 24/7 so I decided it wasn’t worth it to try and continue playing.
Also, making the jump from a corporate gym to a private gym is not easy and can be very overwhelming and scary. The biggest difference is that a corporate gym, you’ll always have clients because there is a lot of foot traffic. At a private gym, that aspect is gone and you have to really be a go getter because you are an entrepreneur now and clients don’t just fall in your lap right away. So that was a struggle but I persevered and kept grinding and now my business is basically referral based! It’s still an every day grind but the way I see it, if you provide a good service and are more than just a trainer to your clients and are producing results, you don’t have to worry about trying to find them, they will find you.
Please tell us about Jwalk Fitness.
I run Jwalk Fitness out of a private gym named Momentum Fitness. I specialize in fat loss/muscle building and I am also a bodybuilder myself. I have competing in Men’s Physique for two years now and recently got first place at the Ronnie Coleman Classic and second place at the City Limits Championships. I think all of us here at Momentum take pride in the fact that we are all excellent trainers and able to still learn from each other. We have built a community here at Momentum that makes people really feel comfortable and want to keep coming back.
Personally, I think my personality (aside from knowledge), makes me a great trainer. I feel that I’ve really learned to gel with all different types of clients and that is extremely important in this industry. “Personal” comes before trainer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood would have to be hitting a game-winner in the city basketball tournament against Workman Jr High. There’s not many feelings better than knowing your shot won the game!
