Meet Anita Alex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Alex.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was always interested in creating art but it was never really a focus until my senior year of high school. Because art was not seen as a serious career in my family, I went to college to study nursing. It was during this time in which I turned to art as an escape from studying for hours on end. I had decided then to focus my time and energy on something I was passionate about, which was creating art. I am now on the path to becoming an Art Therapist, a career in which I can help others using the same medium that has always helped me in my life. In the past year, I have also developed an interest in photography. With just me and my camera, I take photos of my family and friends and am loving every second of it. Through the use of incorporating elements from my artworks into my photographs, I hope to continually explore the world of photography.

Please tell us about your art.
I love to create paintings using my favorite medium, acrylic paints. However, recently I have been exploring with watercolor as well as using mixed media. I am inspired by my own experiences as well as nature which is why so many of my paintings incorporate strong, contrasting color as well as floral aspects. Each of my creation reveals a part of who I am and just being able to share what I love with as many people as I can is the ultimate goal.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The world changes constantly but I do not think the role of artists has changed. Art is an expressive form of creativity, and I personally believe that as long as you choose to create and express yourself, you are fulfilling your role as an artist. Events, both locally and internationally, will definitely impact my art because it will affect me as a person. Every artist is inspired by something and that inspiration comes from the world around you. As the world changes through national and/or international events, it forces people to change as well. Inspirations are continuously growing as a result and therefore my artworks will eventually transform and be based on these new inspirations.
