Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce McClure.
Joyce, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a small, country town called Carthage, TX. My hometown is a place filled with southern hospitality and tradition. I’m so thankful for where I was raised because it is where I discovered my creative drive and first began utilizing it. Ever since I was a child, I had a fascination with taking photographs and storing them as collective memories. I loved filming special moments and showcasing them in a visually appealing manner. I also found joy in meeting new people and developing lasting relationships. When my freshman year of college came around, I strayed away from my true passions and put my effort into pursuing a degree that was “safe.” This resulted in me dedicating the last seven years of my life to educating the youth. Although I have a strong passion for teaching, I knew that I wasn’t utilizing my talents to their full potential.
As time progressed, I fell into a dark place and became extremely depressed. I had to realize that in order for me to regain happiness, I had to put my energy into tasks that holistically brought me joy. After a year of contemplating, and relying heavily on The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, I learned who I was as a person and what I wanted to pursue in life.
I discovered that my true niches were creating, communicating, and helping others. Therefore, I began brainstorming and strategizing ways to turn my dream job into reality. Summer 2018, I enrolled in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Mass Communications and Media graduate program. Shortly after, I accepted an intern position at GIA & Associates, Inc., to strengthen my marketing skills. From there, I took on other relateable tasks such as event filming and promo modeling. I returned to teaching this past October to save enough income to invest in myself. So far I have built my own in-home videography/photography studio, purchased and taught myself programs such as Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Creative Cloud, developed skills in web/graphic design, and experienced event coordinating.
I now brand myself as Supreme Joy. I have my own Youtube channel, known as Supreme Joy: Girl Gang, where I discuss topics based women’s perspectives. I’m also in the process of creating my own website for visual services and have plans on starting my own non-profit organization. My long-term goal is to have my own production company.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I will honestly say that it has not been a smooth road. It has actually been an incredibly long journey, but nonetheless worthwhile.
I originally started my “new life” by creating a blog site that I intended on using as a modern-day advice column. The blog site was in alignment with my Youtube channel (before rebranding as Supreme Joy: Girl Gang), which was where I would share testimonies related to changing careers and mental health. At times, I would switch it up and upload vlogs or discuss controversial topics. Due to inconsistency and lack of engagement, I had to start over from scratch. I analyzed which videos on my channel received the most views, and from there, I developed new concepts. I did away with my modern-day advice column because honestly, I was still trying to help myself figure life out, and I felt I was all over the place with ideas.
Another issue I faced was not knowing as many people in the Dallas area. I believe that any career within the arts requires knowing a good amount of people in your current city. I had the opportunity of meeting DFW natives but didn’t take advantage of it. I attended the University of North Texas with my childhood best friend, so I never took the time to network with others as much as I could’ve. When I decided I wanted to pursue a career that involved the power of networking, I simply had to learn how to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. I now take the time to attend events and reach out to others. One cannot prevail with too much ego or pride.
Please tell us about Supreme Joy.
Supreme Joy isn’t technically a business or company yet. As of now, I simply like to think of Supreme Joy as my brand. Regardless, I have huge plans for Supreme Joy that are currently in the works. As mentioned earlier, I have built my own in-home photography/videography studio which will be known as Supreme Joy Visuals (website launch will be announced soon). I will provide services such as photoshoots, filming, editing, coordinating, and directing.
I also have plans of developing my own non-profit organization which will be known as the Supreme Joy Foundation. I want to host events related to education, mental health, women rights, and uplifting the African-American community.
I am most proud of the fact that I took it upon myself to create a brand that promotes self-love, self-appreciation, and self-happiness. My brand also heavily promotes equality for women. I feel that the world is teaching us, women, how to dress and physically appear, but not how to maneuver through life by loving ourselves in our purest state. This is what sets me apart from others. In today’s world, I feel that we as women need to start becoming the change we want to see. So instead of continuing to complain, I decided to use my actions as a way to help make a change.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I wouldn’t change a thing. Each experience in my life has led me to this point of my life. If I were to change anything, I believe I wouldn’t be where I am today, and as of today, I am truly happy.
