Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Mitchell.
Wayne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2004, we traveled to Nairobi for the 1st time and were amazed at the beauty of the place and the people. While there we discovered very young homeless children living in the streets. These beautiful children were hungry they needed everything any child in America would need to survive. America does not tolerate that level of homelessness among children.
We also were introduced to caregivers desperately attempting to rescue them with very little resources. We cried then prayed for wisdom. God answered and gave us a shared vision to build a community of supportive partners to impact the situation. We are connectors. Our vision and focus is building strong supportive community in relationship with each other and committed to vital caregivers who rescue orphans.
Kenya, East Africa has a growing population of orphans due to many factors. For 14 years we have been traveling there networking and giving our community partners opportunities and experiences with heart and hands to make a positive life changing impact on orphans and their care givers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth. We are not wealthy people but we serve the owner of Heaven and Earth.
Through divine provision we have found that people have been moved by him to be caring and generous.
The geopolitical world in always challenging but God has kept us safe over the years and our group trips to Kenya have been and continue to be effective and encouraging.
Our current challenge and opportunity is to provide resources and opportunity for the children to continue education beyond high school. They are aging out of our children’s homes and need to be supported through college. Our commitment is to assist them to become productive participants in the continuing process of rescuing others like themselves who are still needing a safe place to grow and mature.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the New Beginnings Orphanages International story. Tell us more about the business.
Our board is committed to long term care. We developed our impact strategy around five initiatives:
Child Safe which focuses on providing caregivers with a safe place to house clothe and feed children.
Healing Hands which provides for the health wellness and ongoing medical needs of caregivers and children.
Operation Educate that focuses on the provision of schools and appropriate educational resources.
Safe Water and Hygiene projects which focus on the provision of clean safe water through community partners.
Elevate Kenya Hope Cup Soccer Tournament which involves 1600 children three times a year in healthy recreational competition and fun activity for three days.
What makes us different is that we affirm and support our NGO partner organizations who are indigenous to the community. They are the visionaries and caregivers who are rescuing their own children by the help and hands of people who care deeply and want to glorify God through their resources.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Now that I see the impact that is possible. The young adults who are thriving and have such amazing hope, If I had to start over. I would have been more intensely aggressive, bolder, unashamed more strategic in sharing this opportunity to help more people to see and participate in this awesome opportunity to make a real impact on the lives and future of orphaned children.
