Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Williams.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Oak Cliff and I can remember as a little girl wanting to go into outer space. I always had a fascination with it. It was interesting how this planet happens to be the only one of its kind in the solar system. This world is teaming with life while the others rotate barren. So, when I graduated high school, I decided to go to college as a Physics major. The goal was to work for NASA but during the time after graduating, the administration had been cut in half. I actually found a job in Houston and began working in the oil and gas industry. I left Dallas as a single mom and it was hard. After experiencing several failed relationships, I decided to provide a safe haven for open dialogue about dating and many challenges that we face in life. The organization, Sistas Talk focuses on removing the stigma of counseling and we lecture to improve relationship building, self-love, work stress resolution, and financial awareness.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been easier than I expected. As I find most of my panel speakers are very passionate about sharing their life experience and advice about dating. It’s refreshing to see so many people that are open to discussions about sensitive and private topics such as dating. I believe communicating the problems that we face are the first steps in healing.
My advice to other women especially young women is to never stop dreaming. Gather your resources and follow through with what your heart desires.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Sistas Talk Conversation with a Twist Tools for Dating is only one topic of our organization. I began with this topic because it is one challenge I know exists for all walks of life. Finding your mate or that special someone is not always a walk in the park. Even after marriage dating does not stop. I thought it would be interesting to take a conversation such as this to the next level. Providing the audience with panel speakers who give different tools for dating based on their experiences and statistical research. We make it fun, educational and comfortable to be you and let it out. Sistas Talk focuses on many different aspects and challenges of life.
In addition, I am a Geophysicist and CEO of DM Business Solutions. I enjoy helping people with start-up elements of their business.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
My industry is male-dominated and it has been a true challenge to move up the ranks. Being accepted is the first step, it’s no longer about proving yourself but it’s more about being vocal. Often times, we find ourselves complaining about what we want but ask yourself… have you asked for that promotion? If the answer is no, then maybe try voicing your thoughts to make sure you are being heard. This is most critical during the performance review process. When it’s on paper, it’s documented. Cover your tracks and monitor your progress by making those in leadership accountable.
