Jenny, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Hello! I’m Jenny Havens, a proud mom to two beautiful children and Owner/Photographer for Jenny Havens Photography. The journey to starting my own business in the creative industry stemmed from unconventional roots. I began my professional career in the Accounting/Finance industry as a CPA with a Masters in Finance. While I enjoyed the challenges, my heart has always thrived in the creative world. My interest in photography began when we moved to England when I was young. The access to travel and such a unique history developed into a passion for visual storytelling. Some of those images captured from trips abroad are still hung on the walls in our home! I treasure each one as a reminder of where this passion truly began to form. Those experiences, coupled with my own journey to motherhood, led to the realization of a very specific dream of specializing in newborn photography. With the support of my husband and the determination to be able to show my children it’s never too late to pursue your dreams, I invested in education, quit my corporate job and began pursuing my own photography business. It wasn’t easy quitting a career that defined my professional life up until that point, but I truly poured my heart into building a brand focusing on redefining the custom portrait experience. Thanks to all of my amazing clients, I am so grateful to be pursuing my passion!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Jenny Havens Photography began with a very specific goal in mind – capture my client’s most precious, fleeting moments to cherish forever through custom portraiture. This led to a specialization in newborn, maternity, and family photography. I know first hand how fast our little ones grow! The journey to parenthood is so unique, and being able to visually capture and tell each client’s story has been the most rewarding aspect of my job. Besides all of the baby snuggles, of course!
I found a unique space in the newborn photography industry through offering both studio style and lifestyle newborn photography from the comfort of my client’s homes. The combination of portraits posed with props as well as candid lifestyle moments in client’s homes captures the best of both realms of newborn photography in one gallery! Recently I have expanded my offerings to include traditional studio sessions which has opened a whole new creative door that I am beyond excited to explore. No matter the session style, I pour my heart and creative energy into every image, and my goal is for every client to walk away from their experience feeling like every aspect was customized to visually showcase their special memories.
How can artists connect with other artists?
While it can be difficult to put yourself out there, the relationships formed with other artists I have found to be the most rewarding. Instead of viewing other creatives as competitors, approaching networking with a positive viewpoint of building each other up is so beneficial. I’ve been so grateful for other artists who have helped encourage this journey to owning my own business. Specifically, my sister is such a talented artist with her own successful businesses, and following her journey has been not only inspirational but pivotal to pursuing this career. Whether you personally know someone in the industry or not, there are so many platforms to connect these days and put yourself out there. No matter what stage you are in, having someone who understands the industry to encourage your business/dreams or to be that person for another artist is what makes the art community so wonderful.
