Meet Vanessa Castillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Castillo.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
So, I actually grew up moving a lot and have lived in over 15 different cities between Texas and California. I believe that is what helped me creatively. I got to live near Venice Beach for a while, which is filled with so many artists to inspire you. I have even lived in the valley of some mountains and even a small dairy farm town. Meeting so many different kinds of personalities just by where I was living made me appreciate each city. As for photography, I believe it was around my middle school age when I got my first Polaroid camera, and I immediately became obsessed. There are just so many types of photography that I enjoy and still can’t wait to learn and experience; it really is a passion of mine.

Please tell us about your art.
Currently, I photograph families, couples, and individual portraits. I chose this type of photography because I have a family of my own, and I see firsthand just how quickly children grow up. My goal at the moment for my clients is to capture feelings, personality, and at the moment, candids. I want to offer more than just your simple family portrait. As I continue to grow and learn, I would love to explore travel or documentary photography. Seeing raw people that are not necessarily prepared for a photo is kind of my favorite because it is just so honest. It would be a dream to see a gallery of my photos once I begin that journey.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I believe showing support to our entire community is extremely important. I started out feeling very alone, as well. I really wanted someone I could comfortably seek advice for my business. So, I would personally reach out to other photographers, whether it would for their workshops, events, or even Facebook groups. I was surprised to get such good responses, and I feel like I now have support. For me, that was a really good way to gain friendships and network, so I recommend that approach.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can support me by visiting my website emerierosephotography.com or follow me on my Instagram @emerierosephoto to see more of my work. Share, comment, like helps me as well. I am working on writing more blog posts that are photography related as well, so people can check that out on my website.
