Meet Matt Sill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Sill.

Matt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started right out of high school at a broadcast company in Kansas City, Missouri, as a camera operator. I quickly became a Producer, and not long after, in 2011, I began doing online Film School. I started doing shoots as a cinematographer for the company I worked at, while still doing broadcast television before I transitioned over fully to being a freelance cinematographer, which I currently do, shooting films, commercials, music videos, and more.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say its necessarily been smooth. I’ve had a number of people who have tried to take advantage of my skills or stolen my work, which has been a setback at points. At the same time, I have met great collaborators, who I get to shoot great moving images with, so to me, it’s sort of evened itself out, I suppose.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Currently, I work for myself as a freelance Cinematographer. I shoot films, commercials, music videos, and more. I don’t know that there is something that I think sets me apart from other people because some of my friends are great cinematographers as well, we just light things differently based on images and styles that we like. I am very passionate, which I think is a good characteristic that I have. I am always giving 100% into every single frame of video that I shoot. I’m in this industry because I want to make beautiful images and films, no other reason. That is what I am thinking every time I am lighting a scene.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have a lot of personal goals, but maybe to sum them up, I want to put more of my visual style on my work in this next year or so. I have been putting together some projects solely to be able to do that. Another thing, down the road, I am planning on getting a place in Los Angeles, and traveling between Dallas and Los Angeles for work.
