Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlana Thierry.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marlana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Even though my father ran his own fence company for years, I never in my life considered starting my own business. Weird right? I graduated from college and pursued a career in the technology field. Later, I realized I absolutely hated it! Don’t get me wrong I love technology and still do today. I am a complete nerd. The way the industry treated a woman at the time was horrible. That in itself is a totally different story. I hold no hard feelings because that path led me to where I am today. I went back to school and got my masters in management. That would have never happened if I would have stayed in that industry.
After managing in several different industries for over 25 years, I began managing social media platforms for national recording artist Eldredge Jackson. One day he asked me, “What is it that you liked to do?” HUGH? I hadn’t a clue how to answer! Then the second question comes, “What is it that you don’t like to do?” That was much easier to answer, not realizing while I listed all the things I don’t like, I discovered my passion.
So, began my first serious business relationship with my first client, managing social media platforms. Most think that managing social media is all about posting content and getting likes, but it is so much more! Leading me to start my own business Marlana T.
Why Marlana T? Because it’s catchy and you can never forget the name Marlana. I wanted my business to be my story. What better way than to start by naming my business after me. A little narcissistic but I think you get the idea.
Since the official launch, I am still growing my client base. Everyone knows starting a new business is a challenge, but this is only the beginning of my story.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! I still have a day job! Balancing work and starting my business has been a struggle, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have met and built many fabulous relationships along the way. This is just the beginning. Difficult or not, I get excited thinking about what else is in store, wondering whose life I will impact doing what I love to do.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I help small business owners understand how to use social media platforms to drive traffic to their business. I see so many small business owners struggle with social media, how to use it and how to monetize it. There are some simple steps that can be put in place that will make social media work for you, without a lot of time. I want small business owners to understand they are more than the business they run, and that is what will work in their favor on any social media platform.
My approach is a little different then other digital marketing companies I see. I don’t want to give all the details, but understanding how to tell your story and how to use social media is the first step.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Conquering the fear of just doing it! Instead of focusing on everything that could go wrong, I started focusing on everything that would go right!
Secondly, I love to see others excited about their business. When I meet potential clients and see the excitement they have once, I explain to them the potential social media has for them, that feeling is incredible.
