Meet Demarcus Hicks of God’s Chozen the Mime in Rowlett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demarcus Hicks.

Demarcus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I have always been a performer since I could remember. From dancing around the house, singing to the top of my lungs with a brush in my hand, and hauling my string bass around from concert to concert… you could say I had a bright future ahead of me! There was one particular summer where this church came with meals every week as a part of a program they were doing. One day, this lady named Rita Williams told my friends and me to come to the front office for a surprise. Surprisingly, I walked in and I was the only one who showed up but little did I know, that this day would be one of the most important days of my life. Ms. Rita brought food with a little extra. She brought the mime team to perform for us. My eyes grew increasingly bigger as they performed, and after they finished I couldn’t deny that there was feeling that I never experienced. My life was changed! Pastor Dayvid L. Griggs, Jr of Zion Baptist Church saw the look in my eye and invited me to church but I declined. He then challenged me to a game of basketball and said if I lost I had to come to church. Well, that was 17 years ago and I’ve been miming ever since. I’ve been blessed to use my gift to travel the country teaching and encouraging youth everywhere, and was able to be on primetime TV shows, such as, “So, You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Got Talent!”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been easy because doing ministry sometimes can feel like you’re always under a microscope, but through the power of God, I’ve been able to show people that no matter the obstacle with a little faith, trust, and commitment God can bring you through it. I struggled with suicide and depression early on because I was still trying to figure out how to deal with my feelings after being molested and abused as a child. But through my faith in God, people He put around me, and the ministry of mime God gave me… VICTORY BECAME ACHIEVABLE!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a mime minister that specializes in giving a visual representation of God’s Word through movement and expression without saying a single word. My proudest moments are when I see people’s lives change or seeing then gain a little more hope after witnessing my gift. My ability to be real, transparent, and authentic is what I believe sets me apart.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My ultimate goal is to open my own dance and performing arts school where we teach biblical principles with the skill and techniques of dance and theater. In the immediate future, I’m hosting a workshop entitled, “My Paint is Personal” in September and there is some talk of a possible tour in the near future. STAY TUNED!
