Today we’d like to introduce you to Roderick “Big Rod” Hawkins, Elgin “E-Mak” McDonald, and Rahkim “Roc” Saylor.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As close friends, we all currently have our hand in different entrepreneurial avenues. From being a Recording Artist, Producers, DJ’s, and Fashionist we have made sure we are apart of the culture. Through our tenured friendship, we ultimately began smoking cigars after Rod returned home from a trip to Costa Rica in 2016. One night while enjoying cigars and brainstorming the idea of opening a Cigar Lounge struck us. From there, we began to research and developed branding strategies. E-Mak presented Hawk McSaylor, which is a play on our last names, for the company’s name. WE LOVED IT! At one point, we toyed about having our own cigar but the idea seemed far fetched. Until Rod built a relationship with a key player in the Cigar World. Then, it became real. We jumped headfirst into the Cigar lifestyle. We secured all the required paperwork and launched our first Cigar on December 28, 2017.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, it has been smooth. However, the struggles we have experienced are the normal bumps and bruises of starting a business from the ground up. For example, building the right team, breaking barriers and being consistent.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hawk McSaylor story. Tell us more about the business.
