Meet Cory Cameron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Cameron.

Cory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I feel like photography has always been a part of my life in one way or another. I think the most prominent time I can remember being behind a camera though was during a trip to Niagra Falls when I was young. I remember my mom had a point and shoot camera with her and somehow on the boat ride under the Falls I ended up with it. I was following the flight of a seagull who was looking for and diving down to catch a fish. After seeing what I had captured, I thought to myself, “I guess I’m pretty good at this.” From then on, as I got a little older, I bought my own point and shoot camera and usually would take it on whatever trips I’d go on with my family and friends.

While in college, at Northern Michigan University, I studied Media Production was interested in working behind the camera for television and sports. I worked my way up to becoming the technical director on the school’s student newscast and also was part of the inaugural sports broadcasting class where we got the opportunity to work on the 2009 Short Track Speedsking Olympic Qualifier and the 2010 Short Track Speedskating World Cup all held in Marquette, MI.

After graduating school, I moved back home to Dayton, OH and landed a job in local television as an editor. A job opportunity rose that didn’t have to do anything with photography, videography, or media production, which I took as full-time. This unexpected turn put me in a position to help the people in my community change their lives physically and mentally and I still work till this day for the YMCA. I never, though, lost my passion for being behind the camera though.

“The Y” had brought me here to Dallas in 2016 and I couldn’t ask for a better, much needed, change of scenery. I take photos every chance that I get around the DFW metroplex. There are plenty of areas, people, and buildings to take photos of and I’ll never get tired of it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth. No matter what path you take, there will always be a rough patch somewhere along the journey. It’s how you deal with those rough patches that will make you a better (or worse) person.

I honestly didn’t start taking photography seriously until I moved to Dallas. So, I’d say I got a late start in the game. Since then, I’ve been slowly trying to build my own brand and get my name out to the masses. Since I don’t do this full-time, sometimes it is hard to dedicate the time I’d like to photography. Any time that I have though, you’ll be sure to see me out on the streets, at a meetup, or behind the computer editing photos.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’d consider myself a street and urban photographer (portrait and landscape). I love taking photos around the city of the skyline, bridges, and buildings. I also do a good deal of long exposure shots, especially at night, with light trails from vehicles.

Within the last year, I’ve been working more with portraits, how to work with models, and honing my skills in that realm of photography.

As far as my photos go, I like to “turn up” the color on my pictures and add a little bit more saturation to them. Not to the point to where it’s oversaturated but just enough to give it a little punch.

Looking ahead to the future, I would love to get back into the sports realm, start printing more of my photos and work with more creatives (professional and amateur).

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Well, those who know me know that I’m not the biggest talker but its something that is critical to just about everything if you want to be successful. Letting my voice be heard is something that I’ve been working on both in the workplace and outside as well.

Overall, this helps with building clientele, networking, and getting more business.
