Today we’d like to introduce you to Felipe Velez.
Felipe, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Summer 2005, I apprenticed with an iron forging company based out of Weatherford Tx. Here, I learned the tedious process of forging metal, shaping it and creating one of kind wildlife gates and entrances. This had a lasting impact on me. As the summer passed, I was no longer able to apprentice and took a job at a hospital where my talent laid dormant for nearly ten years. 2015, I decided to get my welder certification and pursue my true passion, working with my hands and building something out of nothing. I started AperZaper Art in 2017, I specialize in many areas of art and fabrication, from abstract metal sculptures to custom furniture with LEDs. Even car modifications and rim repairs. You can usually find my booth at local markets and pop-ups around Dallas selling my signature metal roses and wire cactuses.
Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth ride just because I try to stay positive as much as possible. Procrastination has definitely been a challenge for me but I’ve learned to be more disciplined and push myself to get projects done and move on to the next. Other than that, I can’t complain much when I’m doing what I love.

I take pride in never saying I can’t do something. Challenges and obstacles only make the end product worth my time and energy. Specializing in abstract sculptures/furniture, and welded roses. My love for art is what sets me apart from your average Welder. I’m an artist Welder, I love to create the impossible.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is definitely a great place to start out. The Dallas art scene just keeps growing and it’s getting noticed. The art community is very supportive and always shows up. Dallas is full of opportunities and it’s big enough for anyone to succeed if you really want it.
