Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Hulsey.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Currently, I work as a freelance art director and photographer. I decided to pursue art direction after experimenting with many modes of creating. This way I don’t have to confine my practice to any specific medium.
I’ve always been intrigued by the mechanics of a camera. The early interest turned into a passion leaving me to practice my background in photography for over 11 years. In 2012, I was awarded the opportunity to attend Pacific Northwest College of Art. The curriculum proved to be heavily based in conceptualism which, I enjoyed. During this time I discovered a fundamental understanding of how and why art is made.
I relocated back to Dallas in 2016 where I now focus on more editorial photography and co-producing content for Tabitha Redder and I’s collective, D’où Studio.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I admire the obstacles we all go through in life, maybe not during the moment but, I do believe struggles make for informative breakthroughs. Pertaining to art, trial and error is part of my process.
It can be intimidating to showcase something you’ve put your heart in to. A common struggle I find myself having to overcome time and time again is trusting the value of what I’ve created. Advice to you and myself would be, if you can make it through whatever hardship you’re facing now, you can make it through the next.
Alright – so let’s talk about your work. Tell us about D’où Studio – what should we know?
D’où Studio was founded by Tabitha and myself with intentions to showcase our individual skills as well as learn from one another. I find this to be unique and honest from a business stand-point. In short, we work diligently to produce purposeful content for brands and individuals. This may be in the form of product photography, graphic design, email newsletters, and marketing endeavors. In any project, I can appreciate the dedicated research that becomes the backbone to whatever I find myself working on. In the end, it proves to be greatly informative.
Inspiration for us can come from events including art exhibitions, fashion shows, music, political news, etc. We utilize Instagram as a public archive for said influences. We enjoy showcasing what exactly D’où Studio is by curating thoughtful posts in the hopes to engage our audience.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am a critical thinker which is how I’ve always navigated life. Yet with this skill, it’s important to also be constructive and not solely pose counterpoints. Finding a balance is most important to my success and my ability to help in other’s successes too.
