Meet Sharron Christian of Diamond on the Green / DC on the Green in McKinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharron Christian.

Sharron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For starters, I always had a desire to spearhead a business and reach out and back to help others to reach their potential. When I started the Women of Integrity Club 15(fifteen) years ago, I saw a need to set the tone for women of color to open up and be forthright about their desires and shortcomings to be able to go forth and be inspired.

Later, I had the desire to learn how to play golf and I figured there were other women like me who had the same interest. I then came up with the idea to create Diamond on the Green a golf group who could socialize and fellowship with one another in addition to learning how to play. Initially, Diamond on the Green started out as a “social” club. Through networking, researching and learning the game I found there were unclaimed monies for scholarships that would benefit our youth. So, I partnered with DCSports and created DC on the Greens Youth Golf and Mentoring Program. My vision is to put them in the position to obtain scholarships. I am on a mission to make this dream a reality.

I have a great group of individuals who believe in my vision for Diamond on the Green and DC on the Green Youth Program. Without their support this would not be possible: Cheritta McCray, Diana Cage, Jackie Davis, Jamia Chisholm, Alvita Lowe, Nichol Aldridge, Michelle Lawson and a special thanks to Jon Thomas, Lou Ritchie, and Pete Ealy. Each of these individuals gave Diamond on the Green the platform to extend the vision to create and implement DC on the Greens Youth Golf and Mentoring program.

In addition, I would also like to say thanks to Israel Fininen & Valiantenno Lott of Custom Printing for their support.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road that I traveled to get to where I am today was a little rocky. In this organization, I wanted all of the ladies to keep each other’s crown straight if it became crooked. I also wanted us to keep each other lifted up as we traveled through the good and bad times. Some did and some did not, so with that in mind, the group eventually became smaller and more intimate, but stronger and much more precise. As we know, it is not always about the size of your circle, it’s more about the “loyalty” that is in it.

Through perseverance, determination, and prayers, the rocky road became smooth and brought us to where we are today. God continues to bless the organization and He continues to bring positive and loyal people into our pathway each and everyday. Diamond on the Green was blessed to meet John Thomas, Lou Ritchie & Pete Ealy of DC Sports.

When you live right and do right by people, God will take care of you.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Diamond on the Green is an amateur Ladies’ Golf Club.

I am most proud of the fact that we were able to create and implement our Youth Golf and Mentoring Program, “DC on the Greens” to help them in obtaining scholarships for college and mentor them on life skills as well.

What sets us apart is the fact that we have a passion for what we are doing. We are taking the initiative to develop our youth, their skills while they are on the greens with us. We are leading by example and showing them the importance of giving back to their community. In addition, showing them what “true” success looks like.

What were you like growing up?
I am the youngest of four (4) children, one (1) older sister and two (2) older brothers. I was somewhat of a tomboy growing up. I enjoyed hanging around my brothers and tried my best to emulate what they were doing. My father who is a retired Pastor and Drill Sergent in the Army and my Mother who is a Retired Teacher was very instrumental in my growing up. Having said that, I knew that I had to walk a very straight and narrow line, but was afforded the opportunity to enjoy life. They kept me engaged in sports growing up and in high school whereas I ran track, cross country, played basketball, volleyball and softball. Through it all, I turned out to be an average athlete which I can attribute that to being somewhat shy.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as superseding society’s expectations and growing well beyond the glass ceiling. My goal is to keep God first, remain focused and keep my determination in sync with accomplishing my goals while helping our Youth to become successful.
