Meet Rebekah Ayres of The Hollow Buffalo in Mesquite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Ayres.

Rebekah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my creating art my first semester of college at Kilgore College. I would sell art here and there but it wasn’t until I started at UT Tyler my art began to gain notoriety. When I put my art up at a local coffee shop in Mesquite, Bear Cave Coffee, I sold several larger pieces and gained some more interest. Currently, I’m working mostly in sculpture and doing designs/drawings for several coffee shops. I do T-shirt designs and screen print some.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been alright, I’ve had to struggle a little as far as money goes. Thankfully, I have supportive parents and am very blessed. It’s not always about selling the art, the art will sell itself. The goal is to make people happy or at least be moved in some way. It’s a rough road but you learn to take a vow of poverty as an artist as my friend Zach says. It still has a long way to go, but it’s all worth it. Even if only one person sees my art and it makes their day better, it’s all worth it. Even if my name is never known, making art for people to relate to is the goal.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Hollow Buffalo – what should we know?
I do a variety of things though. I make T-shirt designs, sticker designs, screen print shirts, paint, draw, sculpt, print, you name it. And if I haven’t done it before, you can bet I’ll find a way and learn the process. It’s about staying curious and finding new people to keep growing your network. Not just for business purposes, but for relationships and the idea of community as well as helping people. One thing that sets me apart is that my business faith-based. I’m a very strong believer in Christ and I know that as long as I keep doing His will I can’t lose. My best plus God equals success.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important quality to have is good people skills. I love people, meeting them, breaking down walls and getting to know who they are. I also like to talk, so I’m sure that helps too!
