Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Wallace Cowan, Corey McCombs, Jason Roberts, and Kevin Butler.
Revelers Hall was born out of a love of music, a love of Bishop Arts, and a love of a good time. Jason Roberts and Amy Cowan have worked for years in Oak Cliff to bring revelry to the neighborhood through street festivals like Mardi Gras Oak Cliff and Bastille on Bishop, and the time was right to make a move to a brick and mortar establishment that could continue to build on that legacy.
As owners of Oddfellows and AJ Vagabonds, the team knew the location had to be in the heart of the Bishop Arts District to keep all of their concepts working in tandem to create energy and vibrancy in the district. Jason worked with developer Jim Lake personally to find the perfect spot for a music venue, and with their popular eatery Oddfellows to its right and their new retail venture, AJ Vagabonds to its left, 412 North Bishop became home to Revelers Hall. An eclectic group of neighbors came together to invest in the vision, and under the design eye of Skye Olson, the space took shape quickly.
Revelers Hall’s first hire was Kevin Butler, the talented, local sousaphone player with a friend in just about every band in Dallas. Paired with Corey McComb’s hospitality, Revelers Hall opened in March and has quickly become a gem in the neighborhood, as well as a favorite at which musicians perform.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have been incredibly fortunate to be so well received! We have two challenges, really:
Being prepared for the crush at the afternoon matinee shows with the Revelers Hall Band, our house band. These guys have grown an incredibly loyal fan base- I walked in at 1:45pm on a very rainy Saturday and there were people there already waiting for their show to begin. (Amy Cowan)
We opened Revelers Hall with minimal food because we want to be a compliment to the existing neighborhood restaurants, not be a competitor. Customers, however, want food, so we are constantly tweaking and revamping to find the perfect niche. (Corey McCombs)
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Revelers Hall – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We provide an intimate and relaxed setting that invokes New Orleans and European jazz.
The space lends itself to a more interactive show, with the musicians and the audience intermingled in a way that brings the music closer to the audience. The audience feels more of a connection to the music and the musicians that can sometimes be lost in a sea of microphones and cords. (Kevin Butler)
We’re proud to provide this outlet for art in the Bishop Arts District. We’re also incredibly proud to provide a revenue stream for professional, top-notch musicians right here in their home town. (Jason Roberts)
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Best: People want the arts and will invest money in them. The opportunities for creative expression are growing.
Least: We do wish there was a stronger connection to nature and outdoor activity, which was what led us to start AJ Vagabonds, down the block from Revelers Hall.
Pricing:
- $5 music fee during live shows to compensate the musicians
