Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Hunt.
Austin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a young lad, I had always gravitated to skateboarding there was something so surreal about it, I didn’t know, but I did know that I loved it! I had collected a bunch of skateboard magazines from thrasher (back when it actually used to be a magazine rather than a fashion brand but whatever lol). I just hung them all over my room, ‘talking I covered every square inch of wall that wasn’t a ceiling or a floor, I was in trance with the photographs (I didn’t realize it at the time just thought the tricks were gnarly). One day, I was out skateboarding with one of my buddies who was taught how to skateboard by a professional when he was young, along and we hit the streets, skating everything we could find on the way to Dallas. We eventually got to a stairset to where I had decided to take photographs on my iPhone of them (I believe this is when I had just figured out about Instagram and had a Tumblr blog but didn’t know what direction I wanted it to be) and Elijah saw the photographs after and Told me, “you need to get a cameraman, your view of composition is insane” so I went out and bought a Nikon d3100, then eventually got a canon 6d (which is what I still use to this day).
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
But the simple answer, no it has not been a smooth road. Any way of having to prove yourself is going to be hard no matter what. Everyone wants to show that they’re interesting and or cool especially with social media (another topic for another day). You get screwed by people a fair amount just being in the art industry, young, and vulnerable, which is how you learn you have to make mistakes in order to grow as a person and as a business. Anything you care about isn’t going to be easy, you have to have the drive to actually make it, rather than to just be around and twiddle your thumb. Photography is a great hobby if you can make it as your career (if thats what you want to do) just believe in yourself and work as hard as humanly possible!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a one-man operation with the help of the inspiration (people music, etc.) that I keep around. I do photography, and videography (been shy about it). I would say I’m known for being a tour photographer, I’d been touring with Medasin Dallas electronic artist) been doing that for about three years now).
I’m most proud that I’ve gotten to travel the world taking photographs especially at such a young age its a blessing, I can’t thank Medasin enough for believing in me.
I alone photographed a 900 product catalog (imagine IKEA catalogs) with my friend Bailey and Winston. If you have any experience with photographing catalogs, this is quite a task (also did it when I was 19).
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being able to look back at how I’ve helped people solve issues with themselves with my photographs and being able to meet such wonderful people who roam this earth.
