Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Kim.
Matthew, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always had a keen interest in helping others to stay healthy. After practicing physical therapy for a few years in Korea, I wanted to enhance my skills, which led me to study in the States. But this form of therapy provided only limited assistance, not the whole wellbeing. I felt there had to be a better way to substantially improve one’s life and help individuals to live life to their fullest potential. That’s when acupuncture caught my eye.
Everything about this ancient medicine made sense. Our body is the best doctor. That is, if we can get our body to function like it should, it will help eliminate other problems. Take, for example, a deep cut. A surgeon may stitch up the cut, but who really patches the skin back together? If the surgeon performed the same surgery for a cut on a Burberry bag, would he achieve the same results? The surgeon merely helped the body’s own healing agents to do the work. No doctor can ever be successful if it doesn’t have the help of the doctor within our body.
This enlightenment led me to where I am right now. I want to help people awaken the doctor within their own bodies. Acupuncture truly serves our inner doctor.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Many Americans, without an Asian background, have some skepticism about acupuncture and/or have a fear of needles. Some have shared their doubts that it’s an ancient form of medicine and maybe not as effective as modern-day advances to the field of medicine. In most cases, one or two visits eliminates these doubts and fears.
When they feel instant relief from pain, they know it works. Some buy treatment plans on their initial visit after feeling like a miracle hit them. Many state they didn’t even know the needles were going in. In fact, many of my patients are so relaxed, they fall asleep during treatment sessions. The relief and refreshment felt after treatment gives my patients confidence that acupuncture isn’t just about energy work, but genuine healing to blood flow stimulation which heightens all healing agents in the body.
In some cases, although instant relief may be felt immediately after sessions, it takes multiple sessions to get the body to a true optimum healing state. In fact, acupuncture works best coupled with a lifestyle change. Most Americans are used to fast relief with pills; when pain is felt again, they just pop in more pills. While most know this is just masking the pain and not getting to the root cause, this is what they are used to. I patiently explain to my patients that acupuncture is about treating the real problem – getting the body’s healing agents to function properly. But in order to do that, changes need to be made with diet, exercise, minimizing stress, and getting proper sleep.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Best Acupuncture Care provides a true health education. I want my patients to be pain-free, not just today, but every day. I want them to understand their body’s condition and trust in the doctor within. I treat each individual as a case study, provide a catered treatment plan, and help to make a lasting change. When I hear comments such as, “I slept like a baby for the first time in 20 years after retiring from the military,” or “My 10-year migraine is gone,” or “I’m pregnant after years of infertility,” it gives me confidence that I’m making a true difference in their lives. I also specialize in a diet wellness plan detailing food plans that will optimize the body’s healing powers.
Since most of my patients are new to acupuncture, I make sure they feel safe, relaxed, and walk out feeling confident, knowledgeable, and refreshed.
What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised in South Korea until the age of 25 when I moved to Boston to further my study of medicine. I’ve always been a bit of a study worm and love to learn new things. While my older brother was active, always getting in trouble and getting hurt, I was more of the calm one in the family, soaking in new things, taking time to process and meditate on my surroundings. I have always been interested in the welfare of others, and had a keen interest in the anatomy of humans. The more I studied, the more I realized how special our bodies are. I call it the amazing healer. I feel my soothing and calm nature helps me to be a good listener, exhibit patience and kindness, so that my patients can have a pleasant experience each visit.
