Meet Princess Sherika of Super Cells in Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Princess Sherika.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Princess . So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I came to the DFW area to continue my education at Texas Woman’s University. Initially, I came to pursue an education and Health Studies and Health Informatics, it helps of becoming a Hematologist. That’s still on the agenda. Unfortunately, I suffer from a blood disorder called Sickle Cell. I have Sickle Cell Anemia genotype SS. I have good and bad days, it was on a bad day that inspired me to write “Super Cells.”

I was at work one day and got a piece of receipt paper and just started writing down ideas. It was no representation of children with sickle cell. So, I created my own lane. Not to sound cliché but I do believe that the children are our future. Super Cells is set to be released sometime in September. This was literally a dream, I had no idea that I would take it this far. I could not have done this alone, with the help of Deavonte’ who brought the main character Gizelle to life. Sickle is my passion, it is my purpose in life. Sickle Cell gave me lemons, but life taught me how to make lemonade.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been easy at all! I’m self-publishing and I’m not skilled in this area at all. I have lost money, literally blood sweat and tears. And I would do it again in a heartbeat. One of the biggest lessons so far has been asking for help and patience. It has been so hard getting this project off the ground. So many sacrifices and sleepless nights. It is definitely worth the struggles I have had to endure thus far. Nothing can stop the drive that I have within me to get this see this project through.

Please tell us about Super Cells – what should we know?
I specialize in Sickle Cell advocacy. I am proud of the work I have done so far. I have an annual hoop for a cure, basketball game in honor of Sickle Cell. Along with hosting blood and bone marrow drives throughout the year, I’m known as the girl “with sickle cell.“ And I totally embrace it. What sets me apart is I’m supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God, first and foremost, without a doubt, nothing is possible without him. My mom and family for never letting me “ be sick,“ they always pushed me to keep going and don’t ever feel sorry for me. Deavonte’ for coming into Macy’s and listening to me that day and the rest is history! My roommate, Tiara for always encouraging me and always supporting me, no matter what ideas, she was always there. Alex, my life would not be complete without him and his support. Last but definitely not least, ZK for always coming through, no matter what it is. Financially, mentally, physically, whatever I need, he always came through.
