Meet Kerriyon Tillman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerriyon Tillman.

Kerriyon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out making dumb videos on a cheap camcorder in high school. That fascination with cameras never left me, and I kept shooting.

I honed my craft filming and directing short films before parlaying this into creating marketing and promotional material for several companies. From personal shoots on DSLR to commercial projects on a red dragon, my fascination and passion for creative digital media and filmmaking is as strong as ever.

Has it been a smooth road?
The tough part has come in the consistent underestimation of my ability based purely off my being so young (22). Companies will look at my portfolio and be excited to have me in and then when they see me they ignore the previous body of work. It’s immediately back to “He’s too young, what can this kid possibly do for us?” There is always this constant need to go 3x the extra mile in order to prove myself every time I walk in the door.

I come from a caring family, a good home, and a decent school, so my situation compared to others could be a lot worse, and I am thankful for all of my opportunities.

What do you do? What do you specialize in?
I am proudly a filmmaker first. Nothing represents me more than the many documentaries and short films I have made over the years. I enjoy throwing myself into the creative fires and seeing the art that comes from it, be it good or bad. It is my form of expression.

Commercially, I specialize in writing, conceptualizing and directing/filming creative digital media content. I’ve created marketing content and commercials for university, news, and organizations.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The great thing for me is I never started making films and videos for the goal of money or clout or any of those things. It’s always been a fascination with the effect and impacts a particular movie or ad can have on a person and what they take from that. At that moment, when they watch something that you made, you influence them a little and maybe introduce them to new ideas or concepts that they had never considered before.

My success is based purely on the impact, feelings, and emotions that come to a person when they watch one of my films or ads. I want people to feel something whatever that thing is and to show people what I feel and have that reach out to them and have whatever type of impact that it will. If that interaction is with 5000 people that’s awesome and if it’s only five, that’s great as well.

It’s not about success in the way that others may think of it.
