Today we’d like to introduce you to Shae Carter.
Shae, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
ShaeeCarter was born out of necessity. I had just cut ties with a former salon and felt a desire to take control over my own journey. I wanted styling natural hair and locs to be more than a salon visit but an experience. But once again, I have limited to someone else’s rules and couldn’t offer my clients my true self. So, I took a huge risk and opened my own salon. A place that I could choose the colors, scents, music, and energy. I focus alot on the details most don’t see. I have a special energy in my salon that allows me to cultivate a person inside and out.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve had my fair share of struggles. Nothing too major of course. Typical jealousy and sabotage you see among women and men confined to one industry. There is not a lot of togetherness and building bridges. I had to grow into my own womanhood, embrace my differences and let them lead me rather than destroy me. I am happy I was able to move in a way that best benefited me. Besides that, there is always a financial struggle at times. Learning the peaks of sales and organizing your schedule in a way that allows your clients not feel rushed but still make a decent amount each day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the ShaeeCarter story. Tell us more about the business.
Since I got my cosmetology license, locs and natural hair has always been my strong point. Understanding proper natural hair care was kind of new when I started. With a combination of what I learned in cosmetology school to my own research, I was able to come up with great systems and products to allow our hair to thrive. My salon environment was always set up as a shop that cultivated natural hair, locs and minds. So, it was fitting to name my salon Cultivations. At Cultivations, the focus is not only hair but on cultivating your inner being, holistically through, positivity, consistent skills, and unwavering knowledge about embracing ones authentic, natural self.
I strive to bring an experience to my shop. I feel like I have achieved that. The atmosphere is different, there is no waiting on 3 or 4 head to be completed when you come in. I try my best to devote all my time to each client.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It has been a healthy balance of both. I am honestly grateful for the bad because it allows the good to shine brightly. I try to focus on the good side or else I would have been done. The good is what keeps me going and striving to do better in business and life.
