Conversations with the Inspiring Denia Mejia and Felicia Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denia Mejia and Felicia Hernandez.

Denia and Felicia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Thea Style started because two best friends wanted to create something special. We are both determined, passionate, hard-working Latina women with a love for fashion and it’s why we decided to launch our own online boutique. We met each other in 2012 as co-workers and grew an amazing friendship that because of our shared qualities made us a perfect match as business partners. Qualities we believe we also share with our customers. Thea Style has been in business for about three months now and we have worked hard to grow as consistently as possible. We can’t wait to look back maybe a year from now and see our growth and all the #TheaBabes that have shopped along the way!

Has it been a smooth road?
Taking an online boutique from an idea between two friends to a fully functioning business has not been without its glitches but has overall been personal accomplishments for us. Thea Style is a passion project and is not, as of now, our main sources of income. It is ran 100% by us (Denia Mejia & Felicia Hernandez) and is our first experience in the online market as business owners. Every decision, every order, every mishap is handled by the two of us. The pressure of being two #GirlBosses with two full-time, 40-hour day jobs has definitely been a challenge. It is a lot of work. It takes a lot of research. We are lucky to have each other to lean on creatively and emotionally. As for advice, we’d say just… do it. Don’t be afraid. Learn as much as you can about the product, your customers, and trends. When you feel overwhelmed, remember why you started. Nothing in this world comes easy, but when you work hard and love what you do, it is all worth it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Thea Style story. Tell us more about the business.
Thea Style is the product of us as young Latina entrepreneurs but more importantly, it is a representation of our friendship. As a brand, we want to feature the experiences of women and what we can do and who we can be when we work together and uplift one another. ShopTheaStyle.com is still in its infancy, there is still so much more to accomplish and so many more ideas to produce. Our name Thea is of Greek origin meaning Goddess. We want everyone to treat the Goddess within, so we’re working towards diversifying our sizes and styles. We’re Latinas, so we know how hard it is to find clothing that embraces curvier body types. We have started with a few styles so far, but in the near future, we want to be able to cater to even more #TheaBabes and encourage and inspire them to be everything they want to be and that they too can be “Luchadoras.”

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Both of us come from hardworking families. The kind of families where everyone is working for the benefit of each other. The kind of work that is 40 hours + 6 days a week, physically and emotionally taxing. That example was very impactful. We grew up understanding that if you want something, you have to work for it, that there is pride in the hard work, and if you put your mind to it, you can do anything. We are beyond grateful for previous work done so that we can achieve more in our lifetime. We appreciate all the #GirlBosses have slayed before us.
