Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Richardson and Adriana Contreras.
Adriana, Randy – please share your story with us.
Seven years ago, Adriana moved from Mexico City to Dallas and wanted to start her own business. As a Corporate and Intellectual Property Attorney, she started to advise US investors how to do business in Mexico. After she moved she met Randy who works in a full time job as an engineer.
We got married and started to share our dreams and passions and we always had in our mind that one day we would start our own business together combining our experience and talents. One of Randy’s greatest talent is the art, he has made drawings his entire life, always for fun or for his professional jobs as engineer and Adriana came from the Corporate world having served as General Counsel and HR Director for a large company, eventually promoting her practice in the US she developed her abilities to do networking in order to build her business.
Our professional adventure started when the company Randy works for, bought a laser engraver and Randy visualized the great opportunity that we have to do something together that could have a potential market and where we both could have fun! This is when we fell in love with the possibility’s that laser engraving could offer. This venture was a joint effort from the very beginning, we started to come with some ideas and Randy would stay after work to materialize these ideas in different materials.
In the beginning, we focused on laser engraving cell phone cases which is how we ended up with the name CaseLaz. As time went on we realized there were so many other things we could do with this technology.
We started engraving logos on wine glasses, wooden coasters, leather coasters, shot glasses, guitars, and so many other items we lost track. We soon realized that we wanted to do this in a professional way and not only an “after hours” hobby and before we knew it we had already orders in place!! At this point, needless to say that we decided to purchase our own equipment, formed our legal entity, got the licenses, permits, created our business plan and started to understand more about the markets that we could explore such as bricks engraved for fundraising, gun engraving, and much more! We have started to create our net of suppliers, potential clients and right now we are working hard because we know that this is the way to a bright future!
Has it been a smooth road?
As every business we have had our learning curve not only on the side of the business but also on the side of the different rules and regulations we’ve had to comply with.
However, due to Adriana’s experience in the legal aspects, We believe that we have had a smoother road in forming the entity and getting the paperwork done.
Our story is still short and we are sure that we will encounter many more obstacles along the road but we are ready to get over them.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our company specializes in laser engraving for any type of industry such as medical equipment, auto parts, fundraising bricks, coasters, glasses, phone cases, marble plates, cabinet doors, guns, you name it! in general we can engrave almost anything! Our machines can engrave anything from a little key ring up to a house door!
We are known for our personalized service. In this moment Randy still works until late and Adriana is putting almost her full time in the business and we are selling through different channels but always with our personal attention. We are also recognized by the quality of our work. People get really impressed with every piece that we engrave and this is because we love what we do and we share our dream.
We try to keep long term relations and make a difference, that’s why we are trying to make alliances with vendors and clients and have made decisions that set us apart such as no charge for pick up or delivery or making samples for free.
Also, we are a minority owned company and are in the process to get the certification.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We believe that our city is a good place for our business and for many other businesses. Our city has its own regulations as any other city and State.
It is hard to tell someone if this is the right place to start, everything would depend on the type of business that they want to do. There are some aspects out of anyone’s control that can bring a business into the bankruptcy and that’s why we believe that it is always a good idea to have a “Plan B”
Something that we believe that the city could improve is to give more life to Downtown Dallas, a good example is the Klyde Warren Park, since its opening is always busy and little business around, that activates the economy and bring tourism, the city would improve more in attractions other than the seasonal sports in order to attract more tourists to the area.
