Meet Patrick Holmes of Photos By Pat in Mesquite

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Holmes.

Patrick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography at first was just a simple hobby. I honestly did not think it was going to take me this far. But, I always wanted to get into it, at a very young age I would remember lining up for school photos to get my class picture taken I would see this guys with these big cameras and I thought to myself “I want to operate these cameras one day” and I remember going to the studio to get my senior photos taken at Balfour that is what driven me to become a photographer. So, during my senior year I asked my father for a DSLR camera and he got it for me for my birthday/ graduation gift. The first camera I own was the “Canon Rebel XS” (it was a 10 megapixel camera) I think it was the first generation of DSLR. But now, I’m using more advanced photography equipment but that’s really not important. I am current shooting weddings, portrait photos, neon portrait, some fashions, and do a little bit of night photography. A lot of people from work and just random DMs on Instagram asking me my rates. I mean I took a little bit of classes from Eastfield and Richland colleges to get the basics of photography down and little bit of youtube watching Manny Ortiz and Peter Mckinnon videos.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I do not believe whatever you do in life will ever be smooth. You will always have struggles in life no matter how somewhat “smooth” things are. You will have to fail at one point of time that is how each of us become winners. We all have to fail so we get become more successful. Arnold Schwarzenegger has always said “do not be afraid to fail” that is the motto I live by from day to day.

Photography has definitely been a huge struggle for me. I find myself super exhausted after long day at work and still manage to make time to do photo shoots. There has been time where I have to skip work to do any kind of photography whether with weddings or promises of portrait sessions. But I think that is always the struggle us photographers have is to make time to go out and shoot and really have fun. Another struggle is setting up my lighting and I remember couple months back it was a very windy evening and I brought my flash setup and everything and tragically the wind blew my flash down and it broke but luckily I had a backup. Also, post processing has always been a challenge to learn more of photo editing with photoshop and lightroom to get every photo the way I want it and making sure the focus in the photos are on point. I always find myself staying up late every night editing photos and knowing the next day you have to go to work.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Photos By Pat – what should we know?
I am a freelance photographer from Mesquite, Texas. I go look for people or events to photograph or just really to find a reason to take my camera out and just have fun with it. I love capturing reactions and expressions through portraiture just really give my subject a mood or style. I think my style is conducts of between neon portraits and fashion moments. I try to make every image tell some kind of story. I am mainly known for the colors I bring to my image whether its neon lighting, outdoor photos or even in a studio. I really do not know what sets me apart from other people I look for inspiration on Pinterest and apply it to my work. So, what sets me apart is expressions and location with my subjects. I create so many ideas with everything I see whether its from a movie, tv shows, or from antique, or anything I see in a store and use it in my work. The thing I am really of with photography the connections I have with other people or friends. They are down for any kind of photoshoot. And that particular person refers me to other people. I really did not think it was going to take me this far into this photography business. I am proud of what have accomplished over the years of doing photography.

What role has luck played in your life and business?
I do not really believe in “luck” but I do believe in moments of strength and weaknesses. But the things I have encountered with my business is creating content and how it will separate me from others and pricing my work and being affordable to other people. That is still in progress.
