Meet Hayzen Hunter, Cade Nelson, and Jon Figueroa of Mahagonie in Deep Ellum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayzen Hunter, Cade Nelson, and Jon Figueroa.

Hayzen, Cade, and Jon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started as group friends jamming in the cabin. We had played music off and on with each other for a few years and finally, the three of us clicked and the music wrote itself. We started to live streaming our jams a few nights a week from the cabin and people really dug it. We have family in the deep Ellum area and always loved the music scene in that neighborhood so seemed like the best place to get our feet wet. Started playing open mic at Deep Ellum Art Company and got a really good response from the crowd and ultimately the owner, John LaRue, who we owe a tremendous amount of thanks to. They (Art co.) booked us our first real shows and connected us with some really awesome people that have helped us play all over the neighborhood and metroplex.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been pretty smooth so far, We’ve all been in previous projects and have been burned in one way or another so we are pretty good at identifying the potholes, but we know they are there and we do our best to avoid them. Being starving artists isn’t the coolest shit in the world, but that was already a given. We all have a tremendous amount of love and respect for one another and that helps deal with problems really efficiently.

Mahagonie – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We just want everybody to have as much fun as possible. We really have the audience in mind when we play and want them to have as much fun as we are having playing, we think that has helped us stand out a lot. We are known to have our own parties on stage, bathrobes, and boot-stomping, y’all should really come to check it out. We are really proud of the diversity in our song catalog and we have something for everybody to dance too no matter what your music taste is.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a tricky word to define, especially in the music industry. You can get caught up really quickly in “making it” and lose sight of what’s important. There’s not a whole lot of criteria or big success markers we are looking for, we’re just enjoying the ride and letting the music take us where we are supposed to be.
