Today we’d like to introduce you to Tawanna Fields.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tawanna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a native of Memphis, Texas and raised in Amarillo. I grew up as many children did, cooking in the kitchen with my mom and grandmother. In high school, I quickly realized I was not made for the typical job world. At the age of 18, I packed up my apartment with $200 in my pocket and moved to Dallas, Texas with a dream of growing catering business.
I spent many late nights and early mornings creating meals to start my business. I sold plates out of the back of my car, gave them away to the homeless, and frequented car dealerships just looking for someone to purchase from me consistently. I was almost ready to throw in the towel, but many prayers encouraged me to not give up. Then on another day, I returned to a Kia dealership once again with my homemade plates. The owner recognized my endurance and decided to give me a chance. I made a deal to feed 20 employees every Saturday. During this visit, there was a Dallas police officer in the building who would soon change my life. The officer also bought a plate and offered me a deal I could not refuse.
Tawanna’s Kreations N’ More Catering was born in 1995. I was able to grow and build my business from the investment from the Dallas officer after providing catering for a retirement party of 250 people. I quickly became certified and was listed on the DPD and City of Dallas’s vendor list. I did not stop there. In 1997, I started Tawanna’s Ultra Spic & Span Inc., in 2009, created TNF Trucking, and in 2017, I started with 7 dump trucks, now I have 14. Women minority grant.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road on my entrepreneurial journey was not smooth at all. I wanted to give up many times but I have faith in myself and most importantly faith in God. I knew that if I kept pushing towards my goal and the Lord as my Savior, I would succeed.
My biggest challenges came in the beginning. I was young and a lot of people did not take me seriously as wanting to become a successful business owner. Sure, I had a product and service that the market could benefit from, but I had to prove to them why they should purchase from me. I had to show them that I was serious about my starting a business and that I had drive and passion. If I did not believe in myself, why would anyone else believe in me? This process also took time. It did not happen overnight, in a week, or even in a few short months. It took time and dedication.
I still face many obstacles and challenges today. Being a woman with multiple successful businesses is not easy. It is still hard for people to believe that I do not just run these businesses, but I own these businesses. I have complete and full control over all decision making and everything tied to these businesses. However, after many years in business, I have learned how to deal with these issues and not allow my personal feelings in my business. I no longer have to prove myself to many people, as my businesses’ successes speak for themselves.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is definitely a great place for someone who wants to start a business! I’m a prime example of this. I left my city knowing that Dallas would give me so many more opportunities. This city has room for everyone to grow if you are willing to work for it. Always consider how you can make your business stand out from the others. There will be competition wherever you decide to do business. Competition should be used as empowerment on how you can improve in your own business. Consider going to the grocery store for a simple loaf of bread. Since the first loaf was sold in 1928, there have been many different companies to enter the industry, meaning they saw an opportunity and found ways to make it there own. Now, you have a variety of companies to choose from. Do not allow the size of the city to hold you back. Allow it to be the reason that you know there is room in your market for your business as well.
