Meet Amber Güetty of Alternative Haus Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Güetty.

Amber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My drag story begins a little over two and a half years ago after my husband and I attended our first local drag show at Mable Peabody’s up in Denton. We had been to the Rose Room before, but being this up close and personal to such a variety of talents was so inspiring. There was so much more to drag than just the traditional portrayals in the media. I was hooked! Eventually, we met and became close friends with a Mable’s frequent: The Bearded Queer. They were such a key source of motivation for me to push out of my comfort zone and try drag out. My husband and I agreed we would do it together and support each other on the journey. On New Year’s Eve 2016, Amber Güetty (pronounced like “ambiguity”) and Enchanté LeFay made their debut appearances.

The three of us quickly formed a tight sisterhood that would end up evolving into a performer haus with several successful show productions and an ever-growing family dynamic. We love and support each other’s growth in their art. One thing I always preach to my drag kids, Faye King, and Veronica Peaks, is that drag is all about having fun. At the end of the day, if you don’t genuinely enjoy drag, then why are you doing it?

My drag aesthetic definitely reflects my fun and lighthearted attitude towards being a drag performer. To me, drag is an expression of art through gender, so I absolutely love being able to bring a full kawaii, video game fantasy to the stage. I’m getting to live my nerdy gay “weeaboo” anime princess dream and that makes me so happy!~

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been a little bumpy, but it certainly hasn’t been all that bad. In the beginning, there were issues all drag performers have like getting the makeup, body, costuming, stage presence, and wigs, etc all looking right. All of these factors really reflect your place in the various drag communities, so there’s a lot of pressure in the beginning to get “good” fast. Things certainly got better once I really hammered in aesthetic to laser focus on and fine-tune. As for our show productions, the only issue we ever faced was having a couple of our venues close down randomly.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our family, the Haus of Alternatives, has a business front named AHP (Alternative Haus Productions). We have produced a number of shows over the years at a variety of venues primarily based out of Denton. AHP certainly leans towards non-traditional drag as most people understand it, which is usually centered around the feminine presenting illusion. The performers in our haus are all talented in their respective crafts and cover a wide spectrum of queer art including drag queen, drag king, drag monster, burlesque, and queerlesque. We promote acceptance of all types of performance art at all of our shows, and we strive to provide a fun and entertaining experience that you wouldn’t find at your typical drag show.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is a great city for drag exposure and experience. There are several opportunities to get yourself out on the scene or even further in your career.
