Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Price.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Midland, TX and graduated from Texas Tech University with a Bachelors of Science in Horticulture. While at Tech, I acquired an affinity for wine and quickly geared my education towards vineyard agriculture. The second I graduated, I applied to work my first wine harvest in Napa Valley. I worked the fields doing crop estimates & vineyard sampling and when things got ramped up I was able to start learning how to make great wines. My career allowed me to travel and make wine in Margaret River, Australia and Marlborough, New Zealand as well as all over the Napa/Sonoma area. After about eight years, I wanted to be around my family as well as learn a new craft. This is when I found out about Trinity Cider in Dallas, TX. After one trip to Deep Ellum, I was hooked and moved halfway across the country to be here. Since then, I’ve been making some really fun and unique hard ciders and the business is really growing. I could not have picked a better opportunity for a fun startup!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success usually has its share of potholes! Ever since I began turning sugar into alcohol, I’ve had to basically learn everything from on the job experience. Fermentation science is an attractive career for young entrepreneurs and is very competitive. Schools like U.C. Davis are pumping out kids with degrees in winemaking by the hundreds every year which made it harder for me to stand out from the heard while looking for job opportunities. I never let the fact that I only have a horticulture degree stand in my way though. I applied to every job I could even if I wasn’t qualified. I made the effort to not pigeon hole myself into one specialty and for the first five jobs I had in the industry I worked in a different field. This gave me the chance to see the industry as a whole instead of one piece.
As far as challenges go, there’s not a soul in the industry that hasn’t learned a lesson from personal experience. All the tips and tricks I know about fermentation or working with tanks and pumps has been from making mistakes and learning from them. those are the lessons that usually stick the most.
Please tell us about Trinity Cider.
Trinity Cider is a Hard Dry Cider company located in Deep Ellum in Dallas, TX. We focus on champagne-style craft cider with unique flavors that are very low in sugar.
Some of the more interesting specialty items we create would be our “Unholy Ghost” (ghost pepper cider) or our “Cider Sake Bombs.”
I’m most proud of the fact that unlike most other bars, we have more of a tasting room vibe. We strive for customer interaction and our employees always make you feel welcome the second you walk in the door. In my own personal opinion, it’s our staff that really sets our business apart.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Considering we’re just barely over nine months old, the only thing I wish we would have done differently would be getting started sooner! It’s been such a wild ride so far, I would love to have started this up a year earlier.
