Conversations with the Inspiring Anuber Basalo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anuber Basalo.

Anuber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When my family and I arrived as immigrants to this country, in the beginning, we were a bit disoriented as to what to do to live. I am a professional architect in Venezuela, my home country, and I had my own business. For this reason, it was a bit difficult to adapt to work with bosses and schedules. So, I had to find something that I liked, but I didn’t even know where to start. I have two oldest children, and after 19 years, I got pregnant again. It was something that surprised us and filled us of joy, although this pregnancy was high risk. So, the doctor demanded me rest during the nine months. I had no choice but to do things with low physical impact to protect my baby’s health. It was the time when I started to make things for my baby shower. From customizing Candy Bar labels/wrappers/boxes, as well all the colossal decoration. Every idea that came up to my mind, I literally made it by myself. I can say that my baby’s shower was 100% handmade, which makes me feel very proud. I remember that the people who attended the party were surprised with so many beautiful things that I did during that time I was resting.

During the party, I felt pleased with all the acceptance and compliments I received from the guests about the decoration of the baby shower. So, I decided to dedicate myself to this area professionally and pursue my dream of being a party decorator for which my experience as an architect would give me a plus. The next best thing that happened to me was to see my husband support me with my dream, and I decided to study to get certified. God put in my way a wonderful woman who, at that time, would soon come to teach a balloon decorating course in Houston. It was an area of decoration that I was terrified of but that I needed to learn because my daughter would turn her first year old, and I wanted to decorate the whole venue with balloons. My husband took me to that course, and I got very encouraged when I finished it. I saw my pathway very clear!

Can you all believe that only with the learning obtained in that course, I inflated more than 2000 balloons for the decoration of my daughter’s first-year-old party?

The guests at this celebration already knew about my love for party decorations. But this was the very first time I made something with balloons. So, everyone got surprised, admired, fascinated. I remember pleasantly that one of the guests approached me and said: “Wow, it seems that I entered to a small Disney” and although it was only a compliment these beautiful words filled my heart with enthusiasm, eager to move on with my venture and what is my passion today. That day MVFIESTAS was born.

After that, and with only three months of starting with my adventure, I participated in an event in Houston called “Mom with Glamour.” It is a vast expo organized by a famous Venezuelan mother, where many entrepreneurs meet to show their best of party decorations. It was a success. The truth was that people were very receptive to the decoration I made. I would say that was one of my best moments.

One of the things that stand out the most in my adventure is the support that my husband has given me. He has been a key piece for MVFiestas. He is my right hand; he helps me; he accompanies me and is part of this dream. Also, my children joined to accomplish it too. And nowadays, my whole family is in charge of doing something. So this is a business run by the entire family.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, I consider that have not been obstacles perse, and I attribute this attitude to my immense desire to get ahead in this country, which is not my home country, but my youngest daughter was born here. So, I feel that this country, in a short time, has given me a lot which I am very grateful for. However, what I could name as an obstacle was initially to have the money to invest in the purchase of all the materials. But I want to tell all the women, who want to start their entrepreneurship, that everything I have achieved has been mainly with gods help. Without him, this dream would not be possible; my faith moves mountains. So, never lose faith in God because dreams come true as long as you go to him.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I make party decorations for all type of celebrations such as weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, birthdays, anniversaries, and everything that people want to celebrate.

I feel proud to be able to fulfill my clients’ dreams and make their celebration something special´. I have been touched by clients who have cried with excitement when they see the decoration I made for them. I always try to give more than what they ask me; I think that is the key to satisfy their requirements.

I feel my style is unique. I do not copy any one’s style. I only feel inspired and add my personal touch to the techniques I use, and that makes a difference with others.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I feel inspired by the masters. One of them is Imary Belandria (@mypapilot on Instagram). She is the lady I spoke at the beginning and from whom I received my first Party Decorator certification course. The other one is Mrs. Luz Paz (@balloonsbyluzpaz on Instagram), who taught me how to decorate with balloons.
