Meet Anne Bowgett of Lucky Dog Jewelry in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Bowgett.

Anne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was probably born with the desire to create and work with my hands because I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t painting or drawing or making something. But my journey into jewelry design started 13 years ago when I saw a necklace I loved but couldn’t afford. I wanted to make something similar so I went to the library for some books and started learning. After that I took classes on wire wrapping and started making my own lampworked glass beads and fused glass pendants. Several years later I read an article about metal clay and immediately knew it would be the perfect medium to combine my love of jewelry and my fondness for ceramics.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe all roads worth traveling have a few bumps along the way. Being self-taught has caused a few of those bumps, especially when trying to learn a hands-on skill from a book with few illustrations and no information on what to do when things go wrong!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lucky Dog Jewelry – what should we know?
The jewelry I make is unique in that I don’t use molds; I texture and shape each piece individually. Being able to donate a portion of my profit to animal rescue organizations makes me the most proud. In my family, we have always referred to our rescue dogs as lucky dogs, so when I was thinking of a name for my business I looked at my dog Buddy and knew it would be called Lucky Dog Jewelry. Recently my husband and I adopted another rescue, an older black lab, named Shirley.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Your question reminds me of a quote attributed to Albert Einstein, “strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” To me that means giving back and building positive, valuable, relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and your community.
