Today we’d like to introduce you to Levi Knight.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Levi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I had a goal to open up a coffee shop, so I was working and learning about different products so that I could do that in the future. At the time, I was 22 years old and working at a place called the Bookclub Cafe, which I helped open up. There, I learned a lot of things about coffee, food, wine, beer, and what makes them good or not good. After that, I ended up getting a job as a personal trainer, which was another dream of mine. I was training in the evenings but had a lot of time in the mornings, so I wanted to get a second job. I didn’t know what I wanted to do at the time, so I started looking around and realized I really love coffee and I missed the atmosphere. I figured I should work in a coffee shop again, so I applied to a shop and got the job. When I started, I met a coworker there named Alex and we became friends. He had previously worked at a barbershop in Deep Elm called High & Tight that was located next to an old fashion candy store called Rocketfizz.
When Alex was on his breaks, he would chat with the owners of Rocketfizz – Jacob & Danny. Alex and I worked at the coffee shop for about a year when he decided to leave and go back to cutting hair. There, he ran into the owners of Rocketfizz again and Jacob mentioned that they had wanted to open up a coffee shop. But Jacob didn’t have any knowledge of coffee, so he asked Alex if he would be interested in being part owner and help opening one up. Alex said yes but if he did, he would want to do it with me. He threw my name into the mix and then asked me if I would be interested, and of course, I was! It seemed too good to be true. After meeting Jacob and having some questions answered, I knew it was the real deal! Jacob and Danny knew what they were doing and I knew this dream was going to happen. Jacob & Danny brought the ice cream side of the shop and Alex and I brought the coffee side. Together, Cream & Sugar was born!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a pretty smooth road with a few ups and downs. The toughest part on my end is being a young businessman who is learning the ropes of dealing with vendors and employees.
