Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Bloom.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After studying finance in undergrad, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do after graduation. I had always been interested in programming, so I decided to go back to school for my Master of Computer Science. It was while I was in Austin for grad school that I first met Mike LaVitola, my eventual Foxtrot co-founder.
Mike was working in Austin at the time and eventually moved back to Chicago to pursue his MBA. While there, he took the original idea for Foxtrot through an incubator at his MBA program and I became his reference on the feasibility of the tech-side of the business. He eventually asked if I’d be interested in actually building out the tech for the company, so I moved to Chicago for a summer, built the first version of the Foxtrot app and have been in Chicago ever since.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think with any startup there are ups and downs. With Foxtrot, we’ve been lucky to have an amazing team that even during tougher times, everyone really bands together. In the early days, the struggles were just figuring out the right process for everything we wanted to do – How do we open a retail store? How do we get a liquor license?
There isn’t really a clear how-to guide on a lot of the initial questions we had, so it was just a matter of figuring things out one step at a time and trying to be patient when things took longer than we would’ve liked them to.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Foxtrot is a contemporary evolution of the neighborhood market and cafe – a new kind of corner store. All our stores offer a full-service coffee bar and cafe menu, plus beer on tap and wine by the glass, and plenty of lounge seating. We want the spaces to be warm and welcoming – a place you’d want to stay and work and meet friends for happy hour.
For the market, we stock our shelves with a curated assortment that really highlights local brands, as well as up-and-coming makers. From wine to craft beer, chef-made meals and ice cream, we find the best brands in every category so you can easily discover them alongside everyday corner store staples. And we make it even easier to do that with our Foxtrot mobile app – all the curated products we carry are available for delivery in under 60 minutes. With the combination of the in-store and online delivery experiences, we can be there for you from AM to PM.
We’re most proud of our growth and the community we’ve built so far, and opening our doors in Dallas this summer was also special. Not only is it our first location outside of Chicago, but Dallas is also my hometown, so it was exciting to be able to share the Foxtrot experience with my friends and family here.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Since I grew up in Dallas, I’ve always wanted to bring Foxtrot to my hometown. It helps that Dallas is a vibrant city full of beloved local brands, great neighborhoods, and supportive people. With all the growth Dallas is seeing, there are so many ways to serve the community. There are definitely great retail opportunities here.
