Meet Jay Khosla of BlueJay Records in San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Khosla.

Jay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am 16 and the creator and owner of BlueJay Records, a multi-genre record label and booking business in San Antonio, TX. BlueJay Records first began when I was 13 years old and I managed my first music festival, Z Fest. Z Fest is an annual, multi-genre music festival I’ve done three years in a row now. I booked all the bands and venues myself, and when I began I needed a professional name to work behind so BlueJay Records was born.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a teenager in high school, time management and balance has always been a constant struggle. You find something you want to be so devoted to, but you still have academic responsibilities, which can be tough to manage. After 8th grade, I dropped out of public school to homeschool so as to have more free time to devote to my music and business. At the time, I was in a local pop-punk named Helix Theory band and was multi-tasking my business. Since then I do BlueJay Records full time.

BlueJay Records – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BlueJay Records is a business in San Antonio, Texas. We manage bands, book and organize shows and promote the music scene! The bands I sign, I coach, book shows for and promotes all of their work. My business has worked with many local and nonlocal bands from California to New York to many right here in Texas. What I like to think sets BJR apart as a business is that we don’t charge our bands. I do the work I do to encourage and improve the music scene into a cohesive, connected, and caring music scene. When I got here, this music scene was so accepting and helpful and this is one way I want to give back. What BlueJay Records specializes in is being many bands first label. Our mission statement is to get bands off the ground and on their way to bigger and better opportunities for their band. For many of the bands I work with, BJR Is the first kind of management they’ve ever experienced and I think that everyone, no matter how new or old their art is, deserves a chance to be heard, and I like to think my business can lend a hand in that. We are known for the shows we organize such as our annual music festival, Z Fest.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success needs to be a personal thing. No one can define how well you’re doing or going to do but yourself. I know that if I’m enjoying what I’m doing and I’m making progress, I’m successful.

I know this young man, and know that he is ahead of the times with music. He is a kind and fair person, who really does want to help others to promote their music. Hard working, he will absolutely help in all ways, to make it in the music world. He is generous and sincere, and I know, because I have watched him grow to the young man he is, and I hope that others will learn from him.

I met Jay this past March and he seems like a normal teen, until I heard his musical talent. I was mesmerized by his natural born musical ability and how young he was when BlueJay Records was started.. Listening to his music, and seeing him play instruments are truly his God given talents. Attending his event, Z Fest, was beyond words. Jay may you conquer the music world and beyond.
