Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter James.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dexter. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Shreveport, LA and I will be making my one year of relocating to Dallas on August 24, 2019. I am an only child of two parents with a small family where I am the only grandchild on my maternal side of the family also. As far as I can remember and even looking at old pictures, my parents have always had me dressed up. From Oshkosh B’gosh overalls to double-breasted suits with the matching vest as a toddler, then growing up to only wanting to wear Tommy Hilfiger and Nike Airmax, I have always been into fashion. I started out working in Visual Merchandising and my goal was to work for fashion retail visual corporate, and people would ask why don’t I start personal styling, but I just honestly wasn’t interested. Then, on a weekly barber visit in spring 2018, my barber brought up about really using my talent beyond what I was already doing, so from that point on, I started personal styling. At that time, I was searching for a better job in Louisiana, but no one was even reaching back out to me for an interview. As soon as I started applying for jobs in Dallas, I got back a huge response which led to my relocation. Since being here, I have started to take fashion seriously, build connections and put my brand out for the world to see with no holding back.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Thankfully, the road to where I am currently has been smooth and I am extremely blessed. This road has led to meet some great people that have taught me so much and provided guidance to avoid making some mistakes. But, it’s still not easy. One of the hugest obstacles has been balancing time between personal styling while trying to maintain a 9-5. Struggling with the availability for styling bookings, photoshoots, and fashion events is hard work and really takes time to schedule my days and weeks out.
Please tell us about Littlefashionguy.
I do personal styling/personal shopper where I work one on one with a client creating a look for an event or occasion. I do wardrobe styling for photoshoots and fashion shows. And I have recently started doing closet revamping where I work with a client to elevate their personal look with pieces already in their closet and becoming their daily personal shopper to purchase new pieces also. The one thing that I am most proud of within my company is that it has opened doors for me to showcase other aspects of personal styling and allowing me to be in front of the camera and show my personal style. I believe that I am most known for my brand name and how it matches me perfectly. Because I really am a short 5’2 guy that is into fashion. What sets me apart from others is that not only do I really want to be successful in fashion but I want to leave my mark, make a shift in fashion and leave my mark.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I honestly wouldn’t do anything different by starting over. Everything thus far as happened exactly when and how it was supposed to happen. And I’m super grateful for that. I do sometimes wish that I would’ve started at a really young age but I know that I wouldn’t have been able to handle this mentally and be responsible with my time.
